Fine Arts Teachers Recognized as Teacher of the Year on their Campuses

KISD Schools recently announced their "Teacher of the Year" selections, and four elementary fine arts teachers were chosen for this distinction! Congratulations to Parkview Elementary art teacher Kristina York, Florence Elementary art teacher Lezley Stiff, Eagle Ridge art teacher Leeann Zbichorski, and Shady Grove music teacher Sarah Reyes for their selection as campus "Teacher of the Year!"

When asked about "Ms Z," Eagle Ridge Principal Anne Seaberry said, "When one thinks of LeeAnn, as a teacher, it's not about what she teaches but how she teaches. Her ability to integrate so many other subjects from so many different grade levels into her art classes are truly amazing. LeeAnn loves her students and will do whatever it takes for their success. ERES is blessed to have her as one of us!!" Assistant Principal Brett Stamm agrees with Mrs. Seaberry, and adds, "she is an amazing teacher! Her passion is art! They come together in something beautiful and powerful for students at Eagle Ridge. She inspires a love and appreciation for art in our students. Top these things off with the highest levels of expectation and the support needed to meet them and Miss Zbichorski, 100% of the time, makes our community of learners Eagle Ridge PROUD!"

When asked about Shady Grove music teacher Sarah Reyes, fine arts director Kim Blann says, "we are incredibly lucky to have Sarah in our district! One visit to her classroom and you can tell right away that she absolutely loves kids! Her passion for teaching is contagious, and she spreads energy and excitement throughout her campus."

Students at Parkview light up when they talk about their teacher, Ms. York, and say things like, "she's nice and teaches us about art." "She lets us paint and draw." "She's my favorite teacher of all!" "She is funny and pretty and tells us she likes our art."

Principal Laura Lockhart says of Lezley Stiff," she is extremely student focused in every decision she makes. It is her mission to provide students with support, opportunities, and knowledge to create a love of the Arts. She does this by providing daily engaging lessons, Art Night, sponsors a UIL team, and provides after school art clubs and photography clubs. She also maintains a beautiful art gallery in our main hall that highlights student products. It provides a very welcoming and creative atmosphere for all of Florence to enjoy."

Congratulations to these fine arts teachers, and all of the campus Teachers of the Year on this deserving recognition, and thank you for the passion, dedication, and love you show the students of Keller ISD!

Keller ISD Named one of the nation's "Best Communities for Music Education" by the NAMM Foundation

The NAMM Foundation has recognized Keller ISD for its outstanding commitment to music education with a Best Communities for Music Education (BCME) designation. Keller ISD joins 376 districts across the country in receiving the prestigious distinction in 2015.

Now in its 16th year, Best Communities for Music Education affirms school districts that have demonstrated exceptional efforts toward maintaining music education as part of schools’ core curriculum.

The BCME survey requires districts to answer detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Center for Public Partnerships and Research, an affiliate of the University of Kansas.

Keller ISD is proud to offer general music in grades K-5, beginning band and choir instruction in 6th grade, and continued choral and instrumental music through high school. In addition, KISD began an after school strings program this year, which will soon be in all schools, grades 6-12, throughout the district. The music programs in Keller are known nationally and statewide by their accomplishments and recognitions, and the “Best Communities for Music Education” designation is a testament to the successes of these programs.
