The 5th grade STAR
Walk in Faith with Mercy and Grace
News to Know....for the week of May 9, 2016
IT'S A BUSY WEEK HERE AT SJS!!!
Wednesday is our May Crowning Mass and Living Rosary. May is the month for the 5th graders to host Mass, so your child may have a chance to read at the ambo, or be commentator, or bring up the gifts.
Wednesday is also May Crowning. Don't forget to bring a flower on Wednesday - we were told to send them to the office. Also, right after Mass, we'll be praying the Living Rosary. Each "bead" is an SJS student and we encircle the pews to make the living Rosary and students each read a "bead" of the prayer. It is a beautiful way to celebrate Mary and the month of May. Please make plans to join us if you can.
Friday is the busiest day! The day begins with our monthly assembly. Following the assembly will be the Student Council election speeches and voting. Many of the 5th graders are making the step to represent their school in government next year - I'm so proud of everyone running. Best of luck to all of you!
Friday evening is the SJS Talent Show. Food will be available at 6:00 and rooms will be open to walk through and the talent show will start at 7:00. Hope to see lots of kids and families there!
What We're Learning
LITERATURE: We started Tuck Everlasting today. It's not too late to have your child purchase a book to use/keep for $1. They can mark in them and take notes as needed. Otherwise, they'll use a book that they need to return when we finish.
GRAMMAR: Unit 4 - Adjectives/Adverbs/Prepositions
MATH: Order of Operations quiz on Wednesday (optional review session Weds. at 7:15 a.m.) Students who want to retake their adding/subtracting fractions test should do so this week as well. If they need to come in to see me for extra instruction/refresher, let me know - I can have a lunch session Tuesday or Wednesday.
SCIENCE: Discovery Ed. lessons continue
SOCIAL STUDIES: We're finishing up our webquest Google slide presentations in tech this week.
GEOGRAPHY: Entire US states test (locations/capitals) this week! Students have the option of taking it in two parts - one on Thursday and one on Friday - this may be a less overwhelming option for those students who need to spend a little more time thinking. It doesn't matter which part they take which day. They should be practicing DAILY on sheppardsoftware.com and/or quizzing with family. A reminder to students that past success on the quizzes SHOULD NOT give them a false sense of preparedness for this test. Practice should be done using the ALL STATES option - not region by region. We will play some more bingo games in class before Friday, but this can't replace the nightly independent studying.
Altar Serving Schedule:
I gave my schedule to the 6th grade morning announcer.... oops! Whoever emails me the 5th grade altar server schedule this week can get two tickets! If you can forward me the whole monthly schedule from your e-mail, I'll give you an extra two!!
