Whooo hoooo! We Earned Our Classroom Reward!

This week students earned their 120th paw towards their classroom reward! They've had fabulous behavior in order to earn so many paws! As a class, they have chosen to watch the movie, "Home Alone" which is rated PG. We will be watching it on the afternoon of December 23rd. They may even have a little surprise from me that afternoon! What a great way to start our holiday break!

A few quick things about this week...

Reading

We will begin exploring the genre of historical fiction as we conduct literature circles over the course of the next two weeks. Students may be required to read some of their books at home, and it may count towards their 20 minutes of reading, as well as their 20 Book Challenge!

Reading Journal Response #4 will be due December 9-12.

*A great website to visit to practice inferring skills is "Into the Book." Students can create their own usernames (I recommend they write them down!), and practice their reading strategies and skills with various games to play.

Writing & Spelling

We will be putting the final touches on our How-To writing pieces, and begin discussing elements of a good presentation - eye contact, voice quality, use of their PowerPoint, etc. If you haven't already signed up to let me know if you or a family member is attending presentation, please do so on our Sign-Up Genius!

*My Heritage PowerPoints - Please be sure your child has their most recent saved file on their flash drive for computer lab on THURSDAY. Also be sure to check out a list of PowerPoint Dos and Don'ts on our class website, as well as an "example" of mine! A rubric for their presentation will also be going home, and will be posted on our class site.

Students should be writing at home 2+ times per week in their Writer's Notebooks. All "at home" entries should be dated and marked with an (H) to clearly identify an "at home" entry. Remember... the more they write, the better writers they will become!

Spelling Homework - NONE!

*Each week's spelling list will be posted on our class website!

Math

We will be finishing Unit #4 - Decimals & Their Uses. Students should be prepared for a Unit #4 test on Tuesday, December 9th. A study guide and review sheet was sent home, and is also posted our class website. Answers to the review sheet are also posted for your reference!

We will be starting Unit #5 - Big Numbers, Estimation, and Computation on Wednesday. This unit includes the multiplication of multi-digit numbers, so I encourage your child to practice their math facts in order to build on their knowledge of their basic facts!

Students should be reviewing their math facts through the use of xtraMath (www.xtramath.org) in order to reach mastery of all functions! I would expect all students to have passed addition AND subtraction at this point in the year!

Science ~ Matter

We will be continuing our Science unit on Matter. We learned about the various properties of solids, liquids, and gases, and how solids and liquids weigh the same no matter the shape! We will be completing some investigations on properties of air and how to measure volume this week. Be alert... a quiz will be tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, December 16th.

We are... a PEANUT & TREE NUT safe classroom!
