Nomads attacked China and generals fought each other. After years of war, in 960 CE, Zhao Kuangyin won the empire.


RULERS THROUGHOUT THE SONG DYNASTY

The first ruler in the Northern Song dynasty was Zhao Kuangyin ( 960CE- 975CE). The last ruler, with 9 rulers before him, was Zhao Huan (1125CE- 1126CE). The first ruler of the Southern Song Dynasty was Zhao Gou (1127CE-1162CE). The last ruler of 9 rulers was Zhao Bing (1278CE- 1279CE).

HOW DID THE RULERS OF THE SONG DYNASTY UNIFY CHINA?

Rulers appointed government leaders by the civil service system. This was an examination that men took to get a government position. With the civil service system the economy flourished, more boys became educated, and it ensured only the best government leaders.


HOW DID THE RULERS OF THE SONG DYNASTY LOSE POWER?

The rulers did not keep a strong military and barbarians conquered the north part of China. The Songs were forced to pay them money so the barbarians would not take over all of China. Luckily southern China continued to prosper. Unfortunately, rulers still did not maintain a strong army and in 1279, China fell.
