April’s Key of Excellence: Flexibility:
Be willing to do things differently. Recognize what’s not working and be willing to change what you’re doing to achieve your goal.
This week's mindset quote: “Be like a tree. Stay grounded. Connect with your roots. Turn over a new leaf. Bend before you break. Enjoy your unique natural beauty. Keep growing.”

Happy National School Librarians Week, Megan Pettit!
We miss and appreciate you!
Hello Triton Families,
I hope that you and your family are safe and well and you were able to enjoy some of the beautiful sunshine last week.
As mentioned last week, all students are expected to engage in the lessons, assignments, and experiences teachers have prepared and provided. As we move into our third week of distance learning, I want to champion your children for their efforts and continued commitment to learning. I applaud and appreciate your encouragement and support during this complicated time.
I want to recognize, however, that the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of our students is top priority. Uncertainty and isolation can exacerbate feelings of anxiety and stress, and children of the middle school age are among a vulnerable group. Disruption in routine and lack social interaction can lead to feelings of insecurity, loss of control, and pervasive negative thinking. Therefore, it's critical that we provide them with coping strategies to navigate these feelings. Take time to check in, daily, even if you don’t see signs of anxiety or depression. It’s amazing how well tweens can hide their feelings. Support them in changing their negative thoughts by having them shift their focus off themselves. Ask them, “What would you say or do to support a friend who was feeling worry, anxiety, or depression?.” Focusing on someone else will allow them to start thinking about strategies that they would use to be compassionate to someone, but that they may not use for themselves. Help them examine what they are saying to themselves—consciously or not—inside their heads and to ask themselves, ‘is my self-talk helpful?’
CMS counselors have provided great information and resources, below, and many supports are available through Coronado SAFE. Take care of yourselves and your family, enjoy time together, be forgiving of yourself and your child, and reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.
All my best,
Karin

Distance Learning Week 3
Grading Policy: As mentioned by Superintendent Mueller, CUSD Staff is currently collecting data and engaged in discussions to determine how we will assess student achievement during distance learning. The two most adopted models, issuing pass/no pass semester marks or traditional letter grading, have advantages and disadvantages. With our guiding principles of equity, access, and fairness for every child, our CMS decision will be based on what is best for our middle school students. The District and CMS anticipate releasing distance learning grading policies by April 27th.
Office Hours: Teachers have set, 2-hour blocks of time each day of the week so students can ask questions or access support.
**Office hours are designated times to provide students with feedback. Parents, please communicate with teachers via email, and they will get back to you.
To contact teachers, you may email through PowerSchool or at their CUSD email
https://cms.coronadousd.net/contacts/
Office hours may include:
1. Zoom Video Conferencing Meetings
- group or individual
2. PowerSchool discussion boards
3. Email Communication
4. Phone Call
Reminders:
- Please be patient with your children as they learn how to access distance learning and adjust to the change in their routines.
- Please be patient with our teachers, administration, staff and technology as we navigate this new teaching and learning process.
- Establish routines to include school time and physical movement - and be okay if that routine isn’t perfectly followed every day. The social-emotional wellness of our students, staff, and community is our highest priority.

The Weekly Link:
Dear Parents,
Week Two of Distance Learning in the books! No matter how your week looked, you did it!
As counselors we have contact with parents across the district. We can assure you many parents felt frustration and stress this week. Many of you told us, this week was all about trying to get a schedule in place, and that you were not feeling super successful. At CMS, we KNOW you are successful, and we thank you for partnering with us.
When Ms. Kint was a frustrated teenager, her mom would remind her, "There is much more right with you, than wrong with you." This helped her shift her focus to her successes. We share that story with you today, to remind you to focus on the successes of the week, both big and small. Celebrate those success and revel in them.
Last week we promised you one link, once a week. This week’s link, Resources for CMS Families, was created to give you a one-stop-shopping resource page. We created this page based on questions we were getting from parents. It is full of links to guide you and help you and your child.
Until next time, we wish you well,
Misty Kint and Paulina Vu

Tools for Students
SUGGESTIONS:
- Work in blocks of time. Take a short movement break (1-2 minutes) after every 20 or 30 minutes
- Designate one area of the house for learning
- Add your teacher’s office hours to your schedule
- Communicate with their teachers at least once a week during the teacher’s office hours
- Use your agenda to maintain structure and keep track of your work
Teachers may use Zoom for lessons and meetings :
- Students DO NOT need a Zoom account to JOIN a meeting.
- Students will be provided the Zoom meeting invite code any time there is a lesson or meeting.
- When students join a meeting, they will be placed in a waiting room until the teacher admits them to the meeting. This is just one of the safety features we are using.
- In order for teachers to ensure safety, please remind your child that his/her screen name should be their first and last name. They should not use a nickname or inappropriate name.

8th Grade Parents
Hello future Freshman Parents & CHS Class of 2024,
As we enter into these exciting times for our young students, let's not forget how they started their middle school years: campus orientation, 6th Grade Olympics, 6th Grade Camp, Cotillion, Drug Store, Medieval Times etc. We plan to create a video slideshow that includes the whole class and will be shown at CMS 8th Grade Promotion Breakfast. To help complete this project, please email 3 JPEG pictures of your student to us. Please ensure they are clear, edited and ready for inclusion in our CMS 8th Grade Promotion end-of-year video.
The absolute deadline will be May 15, 2020. There will be reminders, but the deadline to produce this quality video of 200+ students is May 15, 2020. We are excited to be a part of this fun production.
Send photos and/or questions to: NadoFotography@gmail.com
Thank You,
Kimberly Schulrud & Doug Grossmann

Coronado Schools Foundation Virtual Telethon
Coronado Schools Foundation’s mission is to raise and manage funds to provide exceptional learning experiences for all Coronado Unified School District students. The annual Telethon is one of Coronado Schools Foundation’s largest fundraising events of the year and all proceeds raised through Telethon go directly back to our schools to fund the STEM and Arts Pathways programs.
At CMS, CSF funds our STEM and Arts classes such as Engineering, Coding, KCMS Broadcasting, Performing Arts, Digital Media, Art as well as our new state of the art innovation lab where students can reach beyond typical learning through design thinking and creative problem solving.
CSF asks that business partners, community members, donors, and colleagues to work strategically with them to ensure that the May 6th VirtualTelethon is again another exceptional success for our schools.
****If you feel compelled to give at this time, visit csfkids.org/telethon and click on DONATE. All donations will be acknowledged LIVE on air.
We thank you for your partnership in this time of public uncertainty and applaud each one of you for continuing your commitment to the educational enrichment of our children.

CUSD GRAB-AND-GO MEAL SERVICE
Grab-and-Go Meal Service at Village Elementary and Silver Strand
When: Every Monday
Location: Multi-Purpose Rooms at VES (H Street) and Silver Strand Elementary
Distribution Time: 11:00AM - 1:00PM (while supplies last)
Families with children 18 and under will be able to pick up free breakfast and lunch meals via curb-side pick-up. Students who are receiving meals are encouraged to be physically present at the time of pick-up. Additionally, adults may pick up meals for students not present by printing and submitting this form at the time of pick-up. All meals will be distributed curb-side to decrease the risk of exposure. Only those in cars will be served meals during this pick-up time, no walk ups or bicycles allowed in order to maintain social distancing. If you are unable to pick-up meals by car or during the scheduled distribution time, please email Charity.Campbell@coronadousd.net on or before Friday, April 10 at noon and we will schedule an alternative window to pick-up a meal.
While the program was designed to serve the neediest families in our community, children are not required to be students of Coronado Unified School District. On April 6, the first day of meal distribution, we served 5 breakfast meals and 5 lunch meals to 630 children, 6300 meals in total. With such an overwhelming response, we will be preparing even more meals to accommodate our school community. This is free for all children, regardless of meal status - please spread the word!
