2020-2021 Calendar and Scheduling
We have seen an uptick in family vacations during school this year. Please refer to the school calendar (link below) when planning your family vacations and plan for your children to be at school each day, as vacation is an unexcused absence from school. When students are out, especially for extended absences, the school day experiences cannot be replicated and it is difficult for the kids to catch up, and taxing for our teachers to prepare additional at-home experiences for students and assure they are caught up during the school day. We appreciate your attention to partnering with us by assuring your students can come to school each day they are healthy!
Heavilin Drama Club
Heavilin Drama Club will be presenting this year’s production, Rebecca Riding Hood, on Thursday, March 5th at 4:30 and 6:00 in the Heavilin cafeteria. If you are interested in attending and supporting Heaviling Drama Club, please see ticket info below!
1. Tickets will be available for ONE WEEK ONLY!
2. Tickets will not be available at the door.
3. We have limited seating, so we will not be able to admit anyone without a presale ticket.
4. Money will be collected for tickets on FEBRUARY 10-13th ONLY.
Mon., Feb. 10 and Tues., Feb 11 - Sales ONLY open to drama club families
Wed., Feb. 12 and Thurs., Feb 13- Sales open up to the rest of the school
Tickets will be issued on a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED basis. The school cannot accept money for tickets brought in after February 13th.
There is a suggested donation of $2.00 per person. If you’d like to further support the drama club, you may also consider a $5.00 per person donation. These are all suggestions, and all funds will be used for next year’s drama club productions- please choose what is right for your family. Nothing is mandatory. The money we raised last year through ticket donations made this year’s show possible. The money we raise this year will go 100% to next year’s production.
You may pay with cash or a check written out to Heavilin Elementary School. Please make sure your money is in a sealed envelope with your ticket slip.
Ticket forms will come home with students TODAY, Friday, February 7.
Sub Custodians Needed
If you work well on your own and are seeking part-time employment, a job as a custodial substitute might be a good fit for your lifestyle needs. Custodial substitutes frequently work on an as needed basis.
Substitute custodians take on janitorial responsibilities when full-time custodians aren't on duty. These are generally part-time positions. The job objective is to ensure that the facility is tidy, sanitary, presentable and secure for all of the people who frequent the schools. If interested, please apply on Valparaiso Community Schools website.

No Screen Week: February 10-13
Our Heavilin PTO has some fun, screen-free, activities planned for next week. Please consider turning off the TV and other devices, to enjoy some good old-fashioned family time!
Next week we will offer two FREE family events at Heavilin. Both of these events will take place after school from 5-7 pm. We will also have a Family Night Out at Verona Pizza and a Screen Free BINGO board incentive for the students.
On Monday, February 10, Mrs. Dan has worked with a committee to organize a MAKER'S NIGHT. This event is designed for students in grades 3-5. This is not a drop off event. Parents and/or guardians are encouraged to do the activities WITH their child! Enter Door L and have some fun!
On Tuesday, February 11, our PTO will be partnered with Sharp School Services to put on a FAMILY GAME NIGHT. This event is designed for students in grades K-2. Bring the family to enjoy playing games together in the cafeteria! Enter Door L.
From Our Nurse
Please keep your child home if sick, and students must be free of vomiting, diarrhea, fever for 24 hours without medication before returning to school. If your child has uncontrollable cough,up all night, and has not rested, please keep your child home. Contact the school office when your child is staying home sick, and if no one answers please leave a voicemail with your name, child's name, teachers name, and why your child is being called off from school. Our ladies in the office keep track of symptoms and need this information. Thank You!
Our teachers and staff work closely with all the kids promoting good hygiene- washing their hands with soap and water, hand sanitizer, covering their mouths with the fold of their arm, and blow their noses with kleenex and then disposing the kleenex in the garage can. Please join us with your kids at home to help stop the spread of germs!
If anyone has gently used boys or girls small through medium sweatpants or pj bottoms, please donate them to our clinic.
Intent to Return Forms
On Monday, Intent to Return forms were sent out to every student. Please fill those out and return one per family. Parents of fifth grade students please fill out the form if you have a Kindergarten student starting in the Fall of 2020-2021. Thank you so much for your help.

Jared Boxes
The Student Council will be collecting items for Jared Boxes. Jared Boxes are given to pediatric patients in the hospital. We will be collecting specifically for Porter Regional Hospital in Valparaiso. These boxes help bring joy and distraction to children undergoing medical care or procedures at our local hospital. Attached is a list of items the Student Council is looking for from our wonderful Heavilin families. Along with the list of suggested items, we are looking for plastic containers with lids (shoe box size) to hold the items. You can find these boxes at WalMart, Target, and dollar stores in the housewares department. The Student Council will be helping put these boxes together once the items have been collected. We want to thank you for participating in this very important service project for our community.
