Frontier Schools' Staff Appreciation Banquet

Frontier Schools hosted their 3rd Annual Staff Appreciation Banquet on May 2nd in the Student Union at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). This year’s theme was a Cinco de Mayo fiesta – including festive decorations, authentic foods, and a mariachi band! Following the taco bar styled dinner, several awards were given out to teachers and staff - including Years of Service, Teachers of the Year and District Teacher of the Year.

District Teacher of the Year: Amirah Pughsley

Amirah Pughsley was interviewed as the 2017-2018 District Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Pughsley is an Intervention Specialist at Frontier School of Innovation Middle - she shared her personal teaching beliefs, methods and techniques, what she has gained from her teaching experience, and much more in the interview below.

Career Fair at Frontier School of Excellence

The 4th Annual Career Fair at Frontier School of Excellence was held on May 18th –
this event was a huge success! More than 15 employers from the Kansas City area attended the fair and helped raise awareness about the importance of college and/or technical training. The Career Fair continues to be an informative and engaging event for students to learn more about potential careers.

A huge shout out to all the employers and organizations that attended our event - our students learned so much from you!

Home Visits

Home visits continue to go strong at Frontier Schools. Teachers and school staff have visited approximately 804 students in 557 home visits since the start of the 2017-18 school year.

With our diverse student body, home visits are paramount in bridging cultural gaps that might exist. These visits also provide opportunities for staff to understand their students better by visiting them in their home environments. The goal is to foster a true partnership – with both students and their families.

Graduation 2018

Senior Graduation - FSHS

Congratulations to the Senior Class of 2018 from Frontier STEM High School! On May 19th, Frontier STEM High School held their graduation ceremony for family, friends and staff at the University of Kansas City-Missouri (UMKC). Zainab H. was named Valedictorian and Sadho H. was named Salutorian of Frontier STEM High School – they both will be attending the University of Kansas City-Missouri (UMKC) this fall. Congratulations to all of our graduates, you have big futures ahead of you!

A special thanks to Cesar Cea, keynote speaker at the graduation ceremony. Cesar Cea is an Engineering Manager at Burns & McDonnell. He has worked in the global market with one of the top engineering firms in the world and has served on the Burns & McDonnell Diversity Advisory Committee. Cesar Cea currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and is a member of the New Frontier Educational Foundation.

Senior Graduation - FSE

Congratulations to the Senior Class of 2018 from Frontier School of Excellence! On May 21st, Frontier School of Excellence held their graduation ceremony for family, friends and faculty at the University of Kansas City-Missouri (UMKC). Sule T. was named Valedictorian and Brittany R. was named Salutatorian of Frontier School of Excellence – Sule will be attending Texas A&M and Brittany will be attending Metropolitan Community College - Penn Valley this fall. Congratulations to all of our graduates, we wish you the best of luck!

A special thanks to Dr. Diana Carlin, keynote speaker at the graduation ceremony. Dr. Diana Carlin is a professor emerita and former associate provost at Saint Louis University. Prior to her five years in Saint Louis, she was a faculty member for 24 years at the University of Kansas where she also served for seven years as dean of the graduate school and international programs. Dr. Carlin currently serves on the New Frontier Educational Foundation Board of Directors.

Kinders Graduate

Congratulations to the Kindergarten classes of 2018! On May 17th, FSI Elementary hosted their Kindergarten graduation for family members and friends in FSI Middle’s gymnasium. The program began with kindergartners singing and dancing to, “The Best Day of My Life”, a song by the band, American Authors. The program proceeded with each student walking across the stage to receive their diplomas then concluding with refreshments. This was an excitingly sweet and heartfelt day for everyone in attendance.

8th Grade Graduates

Congratulations to the 8th grade graduates! On May 17th, FSI Middle hosted their 8th grade graduation ceremony after school for family, friends, and faculty. This was a momentous celebration for 8th graders taking their next step into high school. The graduation ceremony was followed by an after school dance for students to celebrate with their fellow graduates. Congratulations 8th graders and best of luck in high school!

Frontier STEM High School hosted a Senior Banquet on May 12th! During the banquet, students were recognized and awarded for their academic and extracurricular accomplishments during the 2017-18 school year. Family and staff members celebrated seniors as a part of their send off to their big and bright futures!

Senior Parade at FSI Elementary & FSI Middle

On May 15th, a Senior Parade took place at Frontier School of Innovation Elementary and Middle celebrating and recognizing Frontier STEM High School’s upcoming senior graduation! This was an inspirational and interactive event for the younger students to see what the future has in store for them. Seniors received happy smiles and supportive high fives as they traveled through each campus.

On May 10th, parents of Frontier School of Excellence students gathered together for a CRLP Awards Ceremony and dinner. This was a nice and intimate way for parents to show their support for their students as they accepted their end of the year awards.

On May 22nd and May 23rd, Frontier School of Innovation Elementary and Middle hosted their end of the year Field Day! Students had a great day spending time with their friends visiting different game stations including a 3 legged race, cornhole toss, soccer, kickball, and so much more!

On May 22nd, Frontier School of Innovation Middle hosted a school wide talent show for students and staff – friends and family members were also in attendance. With 21 performances the audience was entertained throughout the entire show! The performances varied from dances, songs, poems and a surprise performance by staff members! This was a fun and entertaining event for all!

2nd Place: Sami N. & Damiah F. – Danced to "Japan" by Famous Dex

May 23rd was the last day of school at Frontier STEM High School and it was also their Talent Show! Students performed songs and dances for their fellow students and teachers. This was a fun and carefree activity to kick off the last day of school!

Garden Gathering

Spring has sprung! Students at FSI Elementary patiently and eagerly awaited the next harvest in their community garden. Hannah Elbing-Artz with Kansas City Community Gardens continues to assist students in harvesting vegetables in their garden. Each week students have the opportunity to check on their crops and continue to learn the importance of maintaining healthy vegetable growth. So far, students have harvested lettuce, kale, radishes, cilantro, spinach, and arugula – this summer they will also be planting sunflowers and so much more!

Frontier Family Fiesta

On May 22nd, Frontier School of Innovation Middle closed out the school year with a Frontier Family Fiesta! During the school day, FSI Middle celebrated students who received character awards. This fun event for family and friends had an array of activities such as music, dancing, games, and delicious food. What a creative way to celebrate the end of the school year!

Spring Blood Drive

On May 9th, Frontier STEM High School’s Science Team proudly partnered with the American Red Cross to host their 3rd Biannual Spring Blood Drive. The Blood Drive took place in the school’s gymnasium and was open to family, friends and community members. Donors received a complimentary Worlds of Fun ticket for their generous donation. This event helped the American Red Cross exceed their goal with over 56 donors – with one donation of blood potentially saving up to three lives! Mark you calendar for the 4th Biannual Fall Blood Drive on September 26th, 2018!

Fine Arts Night

On May 15th, Frontier School of Excellence hosted a Fine Arts Night, full of music and art set in a welcoming Spring time atmosphere! The Beginning Band and Step Up Band performed a variety of their favorite compositions for a full house of enthusiastic guests including family members, friends and staff. This was a wonderful event for students to collaboratively showcase their hard work from the school year!

Playground Love

The playground at FSI Elementary continues to bring smiles and fun to all students! Students are bursting with exciting comments!

Maximiliano C. M., 1st grade: "The playground is exciting! I like to climb on the spiderweb because it's really tall. When I'm at the top, I feel really excited!"

Kindness Club Success

The Kindness Club at FSI Middle started a fundraiser for a fellow Tiger battling Leukemia. The club created a t-shirt campaign called Dash for Diego. The campaign was set up to show support while helping to raise funds for the family – ultimately they raised $691.91! Amazing work to everyone and a BIG thank you to all of our Dash for Diego supporters!

Juniors & Seniors Register to Vote

On May 11th, Delores Blaser from the League of Women Voters visited Frontier STEM High School to present on the importance of voting. Juniors and seniors who are eligible to vote in November were able to register to vote after the presentation. This was a great opportunity for students to understand the significance of voting.

Girls' Soccer Season

May 10th concluded the Girls' Soccer season at Frontier STEM High School. The team’s energy and positivity stayed constant throughout the season. Students, staff, family, and friends continued to show their support with electric cheers! Great job this season girls!

8th Graders Visit the University of Lincoln-Nebraska

FSI Middle’s College Readiness and Leadership Program (CRLP) 8th graders know the importance of planning ahead for their future. Students in the program discussed and planned which college campus they would be most interested in visiting, the consensus was the University of Lincoln Nebraska. 8th graders created proposals to share and present to Principal, Mr. Barber about why it would be a great opportunity. Students and staff advisers had a great time on their visit to the university.

CRLP STEM Leadership Camps

The CRLP STEM Leadership Camp took place at Hiawatha Campus & Retreat Center in Wichita, Kansas.

The boys in CRLP visited the camp on May 11th-14th and the girls visited from May 17th-21st.

For 4 days, students were surrounded by continuous fun and learning experiences. Each camp was visited by special guests: Elisha Satterfield, Assistant Director from Wichita State University and 2nd Lieutenant Sam Samarasinghe from the United States Air Force Auxilliary Civil Air Patrol. Students learned about the new technologies in the STEM industry and how to work together effectively.

This STEM CRLP based camp is designed to develop student potential in academics, leadership, teamwork, and essential life and personal skills. Educational and recreational activities included building a mousetrap powered car, reading, wall climbing, zip lining, movies, campfires, and so much more!
