A message from Mr. Finkle!
By now you all probably know that this years Homecoming theme is....Toy Companies! Freshman chose Legos, Sophomores chose Hasbro, Juniors chose Nintendo and Seniors Mattel. The class banners went up yesterday morning were absolutely amazing! I have visited each float site and am so looking forward to seeing them all put together! I can't wait to join you all on Saturday for the parade.
Just a friendly reminder, to share with your kids. Please be cognizant that students are out late this week working on their floats at the different sites, and walking along Route 130 and other major roadways can be very dangerous. Students need to make sure that they put their phones away and are aware of their surroundings. We would hate to see such an exciting time be overshadowed by the injury of one of our students.
We have also made a few adjustments to our schedule over the month of October due to some conflicts. College Information Evening (10/17) has been moved as well as Delran's Got Talent (10/24).
If you ever have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at dfinkle@delranschools.org or 856-461-6100 x3005.

September Students of the Month!
Week of Respect: #DHSRespect
Week of Respect was especially significant this year as it tied in with our school-wide theme, and thanks to our School Safety Team, it was a huge success!
Student Government officers provided quotes about respect that were read each morning during announcements. Peer leaders distributed buttons to students who exemplified respectful character traits. Teachers, support staff, and administrators awarded “You are awesome because” slips to students, and encouraged students to award to each other. The Safety Team displayed respect posters in stairwells and on walls throughout the building.

On Monday morning, a huge banner that reads “#DHSRespect” was hung in the cafeteria and will remain there for this school year. Then, during all lunches on Monday, students and staff members made personal links about respect that were formed into a chain of respect and displayed in the Cafeteria—No Weak Links. Students were given the option of photographing their link and posting to Instagram #DHSRespect.
Week of Respect: #DHSRespect
On Thursday, we hosted Mix-It-Up Trivia Lunches. The Cafeteria was decorated with tablecloths and centerpieces. Students were assigned to tables by symbols where they worked together as a team on a trivia challenge. The winners—one table from each lunch—were awarded a gourmet lunch on Thursday prepared by Dr. Anderson and served by Mr. Finkle!
Our hope is that Week of Respect was the perfect precursor to Spirit Week, and that students will carry the character traits that RESPECT represents into Homecoming, and throughout the school year.
Athletic News
It is amazing that there are only a couple of weeks left in the regular season for most teams. Exciting times are ahead but there is much to celebrate so far. Girls' Tennis team qualified again for the NJSIAA state team tournament and made us so proud. Boys' Soccer was involved in an unbelievable contest with the #1 team in NJ, Delbarton. The final score was 1-1. Huge game against Rancocas Valley on Monday, October 16 could decide the division. Girls' Soccer continues to improve each week. The girls never give up. Field Hockey has a strong hold on the division right now and is currently 11-4. On October 19, the team will have a night game against Riverside on the football field. The game will also be a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Awareness. The Cross Country teams completed their regular season and are prepping for the Divisional and Sectional meets. Our Girls' XC team is the 2017 Patriot Division champions! Friday, October 13, is the Homecoming football game against Burlington City. The Bears are currently 2-2, coming off of a big win against Bordentown last week. The boys have worked so hard all week and are ready to take the field. Go Bears!!!
If students are interested in participating in a Winter sport, families should begin to fill out the forms on the ATS portal. The ATS portal can be found on Mr. Caplin's teacher page through the Delran High School website. All physicals should be turned into Mr. Guidotti or Ms. Jordan during the school day.
Alumni Walk
Alumni Walk Update- We are paving the way to celebrate Bear Pride! The latest pavers were installed last week along with the an Inlay from the Class of 2016! The Advisors from the Class of 2017 are working on their inlay design. We are very hopeful this year’s Senior Class will buy a brick and cast their permanent legacy on DHS. It looks like we have established a new tradition of not only allowing a platform for individuals, but also each graduating class as a whole, to leave their mark. Please consider purchasing a brick in order to pave the entire walkway. The link for purchasing a brick is below. We would also like to acknowledge the work of Best Cut Lawn-care and Landscaping for installing our bricks. They have donated their time and talents to DHS and provided their work free of charge. Thanks you Phil Velo and Best Cut.

College Planning...What should we be doing?
This Week in Guidance:
● All Junior students must complete 15 hours of community service. Click here for the Community Service Packet .
● Juniors and Seniors are encouraged to check what college representatives are coming to Delran. This affords an opportunity to speak with a person from admissions in a small group setting to not only learn about the college but to also demonstrate your child’s potential interest in the school. This is something that colleges track and can support the admissions decision.
● Is your senior college ready?
○ Seniors should be completing their applications now!
○ It is in their best interest to submit applications in late October, early November
○ Students must notify the counselor via a yellow application request form, 15 school days prior to the application deadline. This will notify the counselor to send supporting school documents.
○ Test scores need to be sent directly from the testing company. It is the student’s responsibility to follow up on this.
College Planning:
● Students at all grade levels are encouraged to begin exploring colleges. Build colleges of interest in Naviance and plan campus visitations.
● Colleges conduct open houses and campus tours throughout the fall. Please check with your schools of interest for dates and times. You can also check the guidance page under “College Open Houses”
● Many colleges also offer opportunities for prospective students to attend a class or otherwise gain greater insight into their campus and academic offerings. For example, Rider University allows students to register to be a “Student for a Day”. Visit https://www.rider.edu/admissions/undergraduate/visits/be-rider-student-day to register.
● Rutgers School of Engineering is hosting “Knight for a Day Engineering Tours” in October and early November. For further information and to register go to http://soe.rutgers.edu/tours
Rutgers University will host extended information sessions and tours for several fields of study in October and November. The tours will begin at the Rutgers Visitors Center next to the Rutgers Golf Course and Football Stadium in Piscataway. The day will consist of a general information session, a two hour bus and walking tour of the entire campus, lunch on your own on campus or in town, and then an academic session. Registration is required. Listed below are some of the upcoming dates. All prospective students and families may also visit the Visitors Center to speak with Rutgers staff any Monday-Friday 8:30-4:30. For more information, contact 732-445-1000 or visitorcenter@ugadm.rutgers.edu.
