September 26, 2017

We are back at work with the important business of learning.

This week was sort of like a 2nd first week of school, as the students adjusted to being back in their regular routine. They were very glad to be back in school after the drama of Hurricane Irma. We began the week by gathering in the church and we prayed for the victims of the Hurricane and gave thanks for our own safety. We do have some families that are still struggling and have been displaced and we are here to support you in any way that we can.

Early Release: PK, K4, K5 11:30AM: 1st thru 4th, 11:45AM; 5th-8th, Noon.

Please pick your child up at this time if you do not wish to incur OOS charges. If you are picking your child up at early release, you will provide lunch at home. Please be patient in the parking lot and come at the right time.

There is no school on Friday. It is a scheduled Teacher's Work Day. A sign up for OOS on this day was sent to your email. At this point, there is very limited space available in some age groups.

If your child is registered for OOS on this day, you must provide breakfast at home and you must send a lunch to school with your child when you bring her/him.

I have observed that some of our students are being dropped off in the aisle of the parking lot or in the area in front of the auditorium. You must drop your child off only in the drop off line. Please pull all the way up front to where the orange cones are and drop off there. We are going through accreditation this year and one thing that the visiting team will be very particular about is safety issues in the parking lot. Thank you for your cooperation.

On behalf of our cafeteria staff, Ms. Innocent and myself, I would like to thank all of our awesome breakfast parent helpers! You are doing a fabulous job and we appreciate you very much! I would like to remind you that students must be in the cafeteria by 7:50AM if they wish to eat breakfast.

Speech and Language Screenings

If you signed an authorization for your child to be screened, the results are being sent home today in your child's communication folder. If a potential problem was identified, you should follow up with the center or with another one of your choice for further evaluation. Please do not ignore this. The center may be contacting you or may have already contacted you.

Communication and Contact information

Please make sure that the office has your up to date contact information.

If you are sending someone to pick up your child, they need to be on your pickup list and they need to have ID. If you are sending someone who is not on the list, please call in advance. We have a problem nearly every day with someone coming to pick up a child who either is not on the list or does not have ID.

Chapel Offering

Each week our children attend a chapel service. We take an offering at each chapel. ALL of our offering are used to help others in our community, in our country and globally. We have supported a local children's group home, a home severely handicapped children, an orphanage in Haiti, relief efforts in many states after natural disasters, food pantries, etc. The list goes on. We think it is important that our children learn to give back. Please allow your student to bring a small offering on their chapel day (PK-2 is Wednesday; 3rd-8th is Thursday). We have all school chapel once per month. It was today and it was a little disappointing. We are now collecting our offerings to help with hurricane relief.

Where to go after school?

It is very important that your child (and the teacher) knows if your child is a car rider or will be going to OOS every day. If a child goes to OOS every day, he or she will be sent there every day and will not go out front for dismissal. If your child typically goes to OOS but for some reason will be a car rider, it is important that the teacher is informed. Otherwise, you will need to park your car and walk inside to sign your car out of OOS. Likewise, any child who usually is a car rider but is not picked up, will out front but will be signed in to OOS at 3:15.

OOS (After-School Childcare)

If your child is staying after school every day, you must complete an OOS package so that your child can be enrolled in the Children's Trust grant supported program. Until you complete this form and turn it in, you will be charged the higher weekly rate. These are available in our office.

If your child will be participating in any after-school activity (athletics, music, tutoring, student government, etc.) an OOS form must also be completed. You will not be charged for aftercare as long as you pick your child up at the conclusion of the activity.

Dismissal Reminders

We are doing much better! Please remember the following.

  1. Come at the right time. If your child is dismissed at 3, do not come at 2:45
  2. If you have kids that are dismissed at different times, come closer to the later time.
  3. Pull your car all the way up and as close to the curb as you can. Do not park and wait. Make another circle if you have to.
  4. MAKE A RIGHT TURN WHEN LEAVING THE PARKING LOT!!! Right turn only is very clearly marked. If traffic is backed up on NE 7th Ave and you try to make a left, you are backing up traffic in our parking lot and inconveniencing everyone.
  5. We can't see through dark tinted windows. Roll them down so we can see who you are and who you are picking up.
  6. Please do not try to engage teachers in a conference during dismissal. Their attention needs to be on all of the children during this time.
  7. Do not double park and do not for any reason leave your car unattended.
  8. Students should only cross in the designated crossing areas and should not be running in the grass or walking along the pickup line. This is dangerous.

Holy Cross Instrumental Band Program

For those that enrolled, the school Band program will begin next Wednesday. Students enrolled are receiving their class information today. Please note the time. If your child is in OOS, he or she will be taken to class at the appropriate time. If your child is not in OOS, you will need to bring him/her back OR notify the office and we will see what we can work out for supervision. Band class is in the music room. It is not too late to register if you have not.

Hip Hop Dance

Hip Hop Dance class begins next week.

Monday 4th grade thru 8th Grade 3:30-4:30

Tuesday K5 thru 3rd grade 3:30-4:15

Parent Engagement Event

On Thursday, October 5th, One on One Learning will host a parent engagement workshop entitled, "Getting Involved in Your Child's Education". This will begin at 6PM and will be concluded no later than 7PM. Please register for this event by signing up on the Sign-up Genius so that we have an idea of how many parents to expect. Your children may of course come with you, but please keep them quiet and occupied. Please click on the link below.

Uniform Issues

I have been in daily contact with the uniform company and have brought all complaints and missing issues to them. The hurricane made an already difficult situation worse. If you still have outstanding uniform items, please email Mrs. Mackey or call the school office.

First PTL Meeting

Our first PTL meeting and social of the year will be held this coming Tuesday, October 3rd. The meeting will begin at 6PM and will be over the 7PM. Please come and be part of this group and meet other parents. Children are always welcomed but need to be under your control.

Boxtops for Education

Please begin saving and turn in your Boxtops for Education. For each boxtop turned in, our PTL earns .10 . It doesn't take long for it to add up to a sizable amount of money. Please turn them in, in a ziploc bag or envelope with your child's name on it as the classes will be competing for prizes.
