The Amazing Spencer Elementary: February 3, 2022

NO SCHOOL TOMORROW - February 4th! It is a Professional Development Day for the staff.

A Dash of Salt - Being Assertive

When you think of someone that is assertive, what comes to mind? Being assertive shows that you respect yourself because you're willing to stand up for your interests and express your thoughts and feelings. It also demonstrates that you're aware of others' rights and ready to work on resolving conflicts.
Today's episode shows that it's alright to be assertive simply because the assertive voice children use is to teach others how to treat them, which isn't always a bad thing.

Remember Your Family Pass

Please remember to bring your Family Pass with you each day you come to pick up your student. We frequently have substitute teachers that will not recognize you and will send you to the office to get a temporary pass. Lee Ann and I also ask that you also bring your Family Pass with you when you sign out your student from the office. If you forget your pass, you will need to bring in a photo ID. Thank you for your cooperation.

Calling in a Covid-19 Related Absence

When calling in your student's positive Covid -19 case, or to report that they are a close contact to a positive case in the home, it would help us if you could give us the dates of either 1) symptom onset or 2) the date of the positive test result. If your student is a close contact to a positive case in the home, tell us 1) if your student is able to isolate, and 2) the last date of contact from the positive case. This will help us to calculate a date of return for your student. We ask that you still follow the new reporting procedure explained in the next section, by submitting the Google Form to BAS. Thank you for your help with this as it will eliminate us having to call you to find out pertinent information.

New COVID-19 Reporting Procedure

(NEW) Process for Parents to Report a Positive Student COVID-19 Case
Please use the highlighted link below to report a positive student's COVID-19 case. The case needs to be reported on the form by the parent/guardian of a student with a positive COVID-19 case.

Do Not Send Your Child to School If...

In the age of COVID-19 that we are living in, you can help keep all safe with a few easy steps:

If your child has any illness symptoms such as,

  • Fever over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit

  • Cough

  • Shortness of breath

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Other early symptoms, including chills, body aches, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, headache, diarrhea, and nausea/ vomiting.

Stay home!

In addition, if someone in your household has recently been tested for COVID-19 and awaiting the results, we ask that you keep everyone home until the results are in.

We Could Use Your Help

Volunteer Opportunities

We are looking for a few volunteers to assist with some tasks at Spencer, specifically in 4 areas...

1) The Food Pantry - we are looking for a volunteer to periodically clean out and organize the Food Pantry located outside near Door #1.

2) The Free Library - we are looking for a volunteer to periodically organize the Free Library located outside near Door #1.

Thank you to Mrs. Johnson who volunteered to handle the Lost & Found! We appreciate you!!

Please call the office if you are able to lend a hand in any one of these areas. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Kindergarten Round Up

Big picture

If your student only rides the bus in the afternoon, please remember to send a mask in with them. We are seeing an increase in kids coming in to the office at the end of the day to get a mask because one was forgotten, and our supply of extra masks is running low.

Food Drive

Our Annual Food Drive benefiting Bountiful Harvest will be kicking off on Monday, February 7th and will run through the 28th. This is always a fun competition for the kids. Whichever class racks up the most points by the end of the month will win a small prize from the PTO. Donations will be collected and counted weekly to assign points. Please take a look at the attached flier for the most needed (aka DOUBLE POINT) items. NO GLASS PLEASE! Huge Thank You to Emily Alford for putting this together.

Our virtual STEAM Night with Leslie Science Center will be February 17th at 6:30pm. The interactive show will be one hour long and students will be able to do experiments along with the presenter, if they wish. We will be sending home materials lists for the live show prior to the event. In addition to this fun event for all, if your student would still like to create their own STEAM based project to showcase to their friends, we will gladly accept videos of their presentations or pictures of art work to be shared on a Google Drive, similar to Talent Show videos. All students will receive a fun kit from the PTO to build their own project. These kits will be going home the week of the 14th.

Kindness Week

The district will be celebrating Kindness Week February 21-25. Shirts and hoodies are available now through Ivory Vines. A portion of sales for this year's shirts will benefit The Carl Nagy Foundation and The Sunflower Project. Students are asked to wear shirts encouraging kindness on Friday, February 25th.

PTO Meeting

The next PTO Meeting is February 8th at 4:00pm. Childcare will be provided.

As always, please check out our Facebook page and/or website for the most up to date information this year.

Note From the Counselor

Counselor Corner!

Happy New Year from your Elementary Counselor, Mrs. McKiddy! We hope you had a well rested, and memory filled, time with your loved ones. For the month of January we are diving into mindfulness, yoga, and other practices that treat the mind, body, and soul. The goal of these lessons is to promote self-regulation and self-reflection in our young learners, as well as to practice a sense of peace and calm during our days.

Lets Connect: If you are noticing some behaviors that are interfering with your child’s success in the classroom, please feel free to complete my parent referral form and we can work together to determine if supports are needed here at school.

More Resources: We also have our BAS Elementary Counseling website for ideas and resources to be used at home!

Mrs. McKiddy
