Testing Information for second grade parents

All second graders will participate in taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) in January. Data gathered from this process and the upcoming NWEA assessments, will be used for decisions about GE services for 2016-17. A note will go home in the Wednesday envelope on November 18th with additional information. You ONLY need to send back the form if you DO NOT want your child tested. These forms are due back to your child's teacher by December 2nd.

Testing Information for third and fourth grade parents

January and early February is the time when testing for Gifted Education pull-out service takes place. Teachers in grades three and four will soon begin the data-collection process in preparation for identifying those students with the greatest need for pull-out enrichment in the 2016-2017 school year. Teachers and parents may nominate students for this testing; students may self-nominate. Students may re-test for areas in which they do not currently qualify for GE service. Contact me if you want your child re-tested.

Math Masters

We are now taking registrations for Math Masters. Math Masters is an academic challenge opportunity for high ability math students and is coached by Ms. Diem and myself. Students meet twice a month on Tuesday mornings before school from 8:15-9:20. Students work individually and with teams on solving challenging problems, fun math games and fast facts. There is one competition in the spring on April 23rd at Plymouth Middle School. Students do not need to attend this meet in order to be in Math Masters. The cost is $45 and registration forms and money are due on Thursday, November 19th.

All my GE students who are currently in seminars will participate in the "Hour of Code" during the week of December 7-11. Check out the link and video above to find out more about the "Hour of Code."

GE Monthly Parent Meetings!!

Our first Osseo district GE parent meeting was a success! We had over 55 parents in attendance. The purpose of these meetings is to provide parent support for students participating in gifted education needs based classes. There will be monthly meetings throughout the year with various topics – see schedule below. These sessions will be facilitated by several of our #279 Gifted Education Teachers. All meetings will be held at Oak View Elementary in the media center and will be from 6:30-7:30 pm. Childcare and a light snack will be provided. Our second meeting will be December 8th and the topic will be on intensity, perfectionism and stress, which are all common characteristics of gifted children.
