Message from the Principal

Black Bear Families,

We are in the midst of a very busy December! As I write this, we are getting revved up for our big Winter Holiday Night. Tonight we are expecting many families to join us at school to engage in a time honored tradition of gingerbread house building. Our rotunda is already transforming into a winter wonderland with artwork provided by our own students. Thanks to all of the families who have donated candy, and to everyone who helped bag candy yesterday after school. It’s going to be a festive night for all!

Last night, we had a great event at school: Arctic Animal Antics. Performed by our talented third graders, it was our first musical performance in the school in nearly three years. The students had a dress rehearsal for our school earlier in the day. I wish you could have seen the happy faces of our students watching this show. For many of them, this was the first opportunity they’ve had to watch something like this.Hearing students sing makes school feel like school once again. A big thanks to our incredible third grade team–Ms. LePore, Mrs. McConnell, and Mrs. Yamanaka–and to our incredible music teacher Mrs. Hinkle for all of the time they put into this show.

If you would like to watch the performance, here is the link for the show: Arctic Animal Antics.

Thank you to our parents who have been mindful of students and other cars in the parking lot. We have had a few close calls on 95th Ave. with cars waiting to turn. Please follow all traffic laws, especially when pulling into the school and near our crosswalks.

Continued thanks for everything you are doing to support the wonderful staff here at Tualatin Elementary.

Working with you for our kids,

Jim

Important Lost and Found Message

Our lost and found is overflowing. Please make time to look through it over the next two weeks--Winter Holiday Night would be a great opportunity--because when Winter break begins, all items left in the lost and found will be bagged up and donated to the Caring Closet.

Winter Holiday Family Event - BAKED GOODS NEEDED!

We are looking for store-bought baked holiday treats (such as cookies, cupcakes, brownies, muffins--anything not requiring cutlery to eat) for our Winter Holiday Family Night. TTSD policy requires store-bought donations only. For safety, due to allergies, we ask for only nut-free goodies. These baked goods will be provided to all at the event. You can bring them directly to the cafeteria tonight when you arrive.

Season of Giving extended

Due to the generosity of families, our Season of Giving has been extended. Families who would like help with gifts and food this Winter are welcome to apply for holiday assistance through Horizon Community Church. We will continue to accept applications until Winter Break. For any questions or more information please contact Ana Uriostegui (FPA-Family Partnership Advocate) at 503-431-4767 or email auriostegui@ttsd.k12.or.us.

We are also still accepting gift card donations from Fred Meyer or Winco. Please write the amount on each gift card and drop off in our office. All cards collected will be distributed to our own families (and are tax-deductible).

Hand Foot and Mouth Disease

One of the common childhood illnesses we’re seeing occasionally in our school is also showing up in adults as well - hand, foot and mouth disease. This is an illness caused by a virus, and is very contagious. It commonly shows up as a rash, made up of small reddish bumps or blisters.

LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW TO PREVENT GETTING IT AND SPREADING IT

If your student exhibits symptoms, please contact your pediatrician and inform the school.

Flu, Covid, RSV, and other Viral Respiratory Illnesses

We are seeing a rise in cases of Influenza A, Covid-19, RSV, and other respiratory illnesses at Tualatin Elementary. As we head into cold and flu season, this is a reminder to please not send your child to school if they are sick. If your child is sick, please follow the TTSD Exclusion Guidance (linked here) for information on when they can return to school.

If your student is diagnosed with Influenza, Covid-19, RSV, or other respiratory illness, please contact the office (503-431-4800 or tualatinoffice@ttsd.k12.or.us) for guidance. It is also important for us to know this information so we can track any outbreaks at the school or classroom level so we may keep students safe.

Please monitor your child for any signs of illness including:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Muscle aches
  • Fatigue

Here are some important steps to take to keep you, your child, and others healthy:

  • Keep children who are sick or are waiting for the results of a COVID-19 test at home. Don’t send them to school, athletic practices, or other activities.

  • Get vaccinated. See the links below for more information.

  • Wear a mask.

  • Wash hands with soap and water.

  • Cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing into the inside of the elbow.

SPECIAL PARKING NOTE

We have designated disability parking spaces in our front and back parking lots. Lately, vehicles with no visible disability parking permit are using those spaces during afternoon pickup.
