Smore News for Your Weekend...
Staff,
Wow, do you believe that the first quarter of the school year is coming to an end AND conferences are approaching?? We hope that today you were able to bring back some "nuggets" of learning either at the symposium for certificated staff or with the PD for support staff with Laura (also offered on the 31st). Professional learning is such an important part of every aspect of our profession and I hope you found today a valuable learning experience.
A HUGE shout out to our specials teachers--Jim, Kim W., Kim C., and Pam for organizing our Walk-About! The day went smoothly thanks to their cooperation and dedication to SRES! Thank you all so much!
SRES is an awesome place for students to learn because of all you do each and every day! Thank you for continuing to shine in our “STAR” school!
Thank you for ensuring that SRES ignites Success Through a creative Environment with an Achievement Mindset!
Have a Great Weekend!

Parent-Teacher Conference Reminder
Teachers,
Parent–teacher conferences are an important component of ongoing home–school communication and family involvement in your classroom. Whether this is your first parent-teacher conference or you have done dozens over the course of your teaching career, it is important, like everything else in our practice, to reflect on what practices are most effective—so, I suggest planning with the end in mind.
What is it that you want parents to know about their child in the classroom? You have data to share, are you sharing it in “teacher terms” or explaining it so that parents are clear on where their child is and where they need to go in their learning? Remember, this is a two-way conversation. Not only is this an opportunity for parents to learn from you, but for you to learn from them. Nobody knows your students better than their families. Their insights into their child’s strengths and needs, learning styles, and non-school learning opportunities can help you improve your instructional methods. Your efforts to better understand their aspirations and perspectives make parents feel respected and build trust with them.
Teachers, please make sure that you are communicating with parents regularly. Share with parents how they will know the progress their child is making in their learning beyond this conference and the report card.
2016-2017 Perceptual Survey
You are being asked to participate in FCPS’s system-wide perceptual survey. Your participation in this survey is voluntary; however, your feedback is critical to the school’s improvement efforts and evaluating district-wide progress related to strategic goals. Your responses will remain confidential. Your responses will be combined with those of other employees at Spring Ridge.

How are you using the Practices and Crosscutting Concepts in Science?
When we ask students how the Practices helped them to solve a problem, they then relate the skills of being a scientist to the concept they are learning. The Crosscutting Concepts allow students to see the "bigger picture". In the pictures below are some samples of sharing crosscutting concepts. You may have noticed in the STEAM and Maker Space rooms some charts with the crosscutting concepts at the top. As you complete an activity, please add to the chart. This will allow students to develop the concepts and how they can be used in all subjects and areas. By creating a space in your room or in a student notebook to record, you provide an opportunity to discuss the connectivity in lessons. We know that learning and memory are best impacted when the brain can make connections!
