Henderson County Schools Celebrate National School Lunch Week
October 17, 2018
“Lots 2 Love” during #NSLW18
To recognize the National School Lunch Program and the 30 million children it serves every day, Henderson County Schools will recognize National School Lunch Week from October 15-19, 2018. The theme, “Lots 2 Love,” encourages students and school nutrition professionals across the country to share what they love most about school lunch programs.
National School Lunch Week will emphasize the healthy foods that are offered daily at Henderson County Schools. “School lunches are healthier than ever, with more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and less fat and sodium,” noted Charlotte Baumgartner, Director of Child Nutrition. “National School Lunch Week helps us educate families and students about all the benefits of our lunch program and the appealing choices we offer.”
The federally-funded National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides nutritionally balanced, healthy meals to students every day. The program, which has been serving the nation’s children for more than 70 years, requires school meals to meet federal nutrition standards like offering fruits and vegetables every day, serving whole grain-rich foods, and limiting fat, calories, and sodium.
We strive to offer a variety of choices for students and will be changing up the menu during this week to offer some new menu ideas. Some of the new menu items being served this week include Crunchy Hawaiian Chicken Wrap, Scalloped Potatoes, Veggie Wrap, Nachos with Chicken, and Baha Mac & Cheese.
