5th Grade News
Week of August 31st
All Things EQ Weekly Motto
I show up positively for myself and the people around me.
ELA
This week in ELA, our learning targets are to explain the author’s purpose and message within a text. We will continue to synthesize information from multiple selections using a knowledge map to help us. We will practice our vocabulary, fluency and decoding skills within our story selection. We will begin Module 2 towards the end of the week, where we will be learning to recognize characteristics and structures of informational text. We will begin to analyze the relationships and conflicts among characters, and also explore on Amplify Reading to practice literacy skills.

Math
I cannot believe we have already been in school for a month, time sure flies when you are having fun (or when you are spending your school days on Zoom). We are on our final push to complete module 1, and learning about decimals. This week we will be focusing on multiplying and dividing decimals. We have been so successful with submitting "homework" that we will continue having exit tickets the only math work due daily. If you feel like your child needs extra practice, or needs some extra math to do they are more than welcome to complete the problem set and/or homework pages in their math binders. Please review your child's grades with them in PowerSchools, and double check that all quizzes are completed for module 1, there have been three quizzes so far. As always, feel free to reach out if you have any additional concerns or questions!

Science
This week we will be learning about gravity and the Solar System. Students will learn about the inner and outer planets and their characteristics. At the end of the week students will have an opportunity to begin a research project on a planet that will be due next week. Please take a moment to check grades in Powerschool and check assignments on Canvas. All assignments are expected to be completed even if they are worth 0 points. I will mark them complete or incomplete. The daily assignments provide students the opportunity to process their learning and solidify the concepts that will appear on quizzes. If students aren't completing the assignments it could affect how well they do on the quizzes.

Online Learning
We are SO excited to finally be able to start small groups and RTI Today! Small groups will give each student an opportunity to have additional mini lessons, ask questions, and continue to build connections with each teacher in a smaller environment. These small groups are posted on each teacher’s classroom home page. Students who are not meeting with teachers in small groups should work asynchronously on their assignments for the day. If they need assistance teachers will be available from 2:05-2:45 to assist students. Response to Intervention, RTI for short, gives each student an opportunity for intervention or extension. You should have received an email from your homeroom teacher letting you know which teacher's Zoom your child should go to at 10:30. For RTI students will either have direct instruction with one of the 5th grade teachers or will be working independently on a computer based program.
