Principal Message
UPCOMING EVENTS – If it’s March, that must mean it is time for the annual March Madness 4-Square Tournament for fourth & fifth graders! Students have a great time, while learning skills and sportsmanship. By the end of the month we will crown the 4-Square champion for 4th & 5th grades.
TESTING - Over the next six weeks students will be working hard in class on reading, math, and science as our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students prepare for the state assessment coming up soon. Thank you for taking time to help your child with homework as this reinforces skills and concepts they are learning in class.
15 QUESTIONS - I came across a great article about engaging children in discussions about their school day. “15 Questions to Replace ‘How Was School Today?’” acknowledged how hard it is to sometimes get more than an ‘it was okay’ response from children. There are so many awesome things happening at school but drawing the information out of our children can be difficult. The author, Elena Aguilar, shared 15 questions that, with minor modifications, could work with children of all ages.
Here are just a few:
-Tell me about a moment today when you felt excited about what you were learning.
-Tell me about a moment in class when you felt confused.
-Think about what you learned and did in school today. What’s something you’d like to know more about?
-Were there any moments today when you felt proud of yourself?
-What are you looking forward to tomorrow?

WE APPRECIATE OUR PARAEDUCATORS!
Next week is Para-educator Appreciation Week at Brookdale. We have an amazing and talented bunch of paras who help us meet students’ needs in countless ways. In addition to providing supervision at arrival, dismissal, lunch and recess, our paras work skillfully with small groups of students to build academic and social skills. Their dedication to, and heart for, students is outstanding. Please join us in thanking: Amber Alexander, Karina Campos, Crystalina Claudio, Glynn Gibbs, Maurissa Gile, Kim Lathrom, Faaalo Liulevaega, Kelsey Mose, Renee Peebles, Sonyalynn Rivera, Elizabeth Williams and Jenny Williams. We can't thank them enough for all their hard work.

HOME & SCHOOL CONNECTION
LAST CHANCE!
Lindquist Dental will be at Brookdale on March 2 & 3. Only students that return a completed permission form will receive an oral screening. More are available in our school office. Students will be provided with an oral health screening & assessment, dental sealant and/or fluoride varnish. They will also receive an oral health report and a goodie bag to take home at the end of their visit. No child is turned away due to the inability to pay. If you have questions, please contact Jen Van at 253-298-3124.
STUDENTS WILL BE CALLED WHEN YOU ARRIVE
Due to safety issues and lost class time, no student will be called from class (even if you are running late) before the parent arrives to check them out. Once you have followed our check out procedures, we will be happy to call them from class. It is very helpful and speeds up the check-out process if you send a note with your child in the morning, especially if you are checking them out during lunch time.
HIGHLY CAPABLE STUDENT PROGRAM
It’s time to refer 3rd and 4th grade students for the 2020-2021 Highly Capable Student Program!
Do you have a student who…
- learns easily and quickly?
- thinks up unusual ways to solve hard problems?
- has a clever sense of humor?
- dislikes doing the same thing over and over?
- thinks logically and wants things to make sense?
- is open to new ideas?
- is persistent and wants to keep trying with difficult tasks?
If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, please refer your student to test for the Highly Capable Student Program. Please complete a Project Excel Program Referral packet online (https://bit.ly/2RRmKGb) by 4:00pm, March 13th. Testing materials are ordered the next day and late registrations may not be able to be accommodated.
Please be aware that students who live within the district boundaries will receive first consideration. Out-of-district students who attend Franklin Pierce schools must be granted another year’s release and will be placed in the program after all qualifying in-district students have been served.
If you have any questions, please contact Annette Burnett by phone at (253) 298-3062 or by email at aburnett@fpschools.org.
