Assistant Principal's Message
Dear Oak Hills Families,
This week has been a week of firsts! We are having our first full week. We've had our first fire drill, which is always a major milestone, and we did our first early release dismissal which went very smoothly thanks to your help. We also get to welcome you to our first parent night of the new year, Curriculum Night. This event is happening tonight, Thursday, September 14th. Please remember that this is a parent only event. Please leave students and younger siblings at home.
Here is the schedule for the night:
5:00pm-6:00pm ELL Parent Meeting
6:00pm-6:40pm K-2nd Grade Classroom Presentations
6:45pm-7:15pm Principal’s Presentation in gym (also livestreamed into classrooms)
7:20pm-8:00pm 3rd-5th Grade Classroom Presentations
Our wonderful specialists, (P.E., Music, Library, and Technology), will be available in the gym from 6:30-6:45. They will also stay in the gym after the Principal's presentation. They can greet you and answer your questions there until 7:30. Please join us to meet your child's teacher and find out what they will be learning in class.
Something new that we will be focusing in our classrooms this year is Depth of Knowledge. Rather than just asking our students to complete tasks that involve recall of facts, we want them to be able to work through problems that extend their reasoning and strategic thinking skills. Teachers will be using some of their collaboration time on Wednesdays to design learning opportunities that ask students to dig deeper and use the information they know in different ways. We believe this will better prepare our students to work on real problems that they will face later on in their education and their future careers.
On a personal note, I just want to say how much I have enjoyed getting to know you and your students so far. I could not have been more impressed by the kindness of the students that attend Oak Hills. I have felt warmly welcomed and accepted by everyone I have met. It feels great to be part of this community and I hope to serve you well.
Warm regards,
Jennifer DeMartino

Jogathon
Just a reminder that our run will occur on Friday, October 6th.
The Jog-A-Thon is our main fundraiser for the PTO’s general budget, funding a huge variety of our school’s programs and activities. Our goal this year is to raise $35,000 and have 100% student body participation! If each student raised a minimum of $60, we would easily surpass our goals! This year, we have a fun and exciting incentive to meet our goal. If we reach $35,000, Principal Sheila Baumgardner and our Assistant Principal Jennifer DeMartino have agreed to ride tricycles throughout the school for an entire school day dressed in costume! There may even be a race at the assembly. Kids…let’s reach this goal!
We will once again be using Pledgestar in addition to the donation envelopes as a way to reach out to friends and family both near and far. Collecting donations has never been easier, especially from friends and family that live out of town. You need to set up your Pledgestar account every year, but it really is quick and painless. Just visit www.pledgestar.com/oakhills to get started.
It takes a large number of volunteers to make this amazing event and fundraiser happen. We need adults to help tally laps for every class at each grade level as well as helpers for set-up and clean-up. All volunteers and visitors need to complete the district’s volunteer background check before being eligible to work with students and volunteer in the school and classroom. It only takes a few minutes, but needs to be done several weeks before you plan to volunteer at school! Please visit https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/depts/CCI/volunteer-engage to get started.
Jog-A-Thon pledge packets and information went home last Friday. Please review the information provided and feel free to contact the Jog-A-Thon team at jogathon@oakhillspto.org if you have any questions.
TAG Information Night
Every year students are considered for Talented and Gifted services in Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). If you think your child might qualify, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form that is available in our school’s office. Completing this form gives our school TAG committee more information about your child, but it is not required. All qualified students will be considered regardless of its completion.
Oregon law and District policy define gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.
The Parent Information Form must be completed and returned to our school’s TAG facilitator, or to the school’s office. If you would like more information, please come to our TAG Information Night on September 18th, from 6-7.
Picture Permissions
Google Docs Permissions
Additionally, please consider signing off on the Google Apps for Education permission form if you haven’t done so already. As a Future Ready School, students will be using google docs to create and edit docs, presentations, and spreadsheets on their Chromebooks. Multiple students can work on the same document at the same time, and every change is saved automatically. Many of our teachers will also be using Google Classroom to create, share, and grade assignments. Google Classroom helps improve communication with students and helps create a paperless digital flow. Google Apps for Education is compliant with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act as they do not collect or use student data for advertising purposes or to create ads profiles and they do not share emails for advertising purposes. If you have additional questions or concerns, please feel free to call me.
