Battle of the Books
This year’s Battle took place virtually in six separate Zoom meetings with 256 teams total participating. Congratulations to the 5 teams below from LES that competed to answer the 40 Battle questions. All teams should be very proud of their efforts.
Thank you to all BoB parents for assisting their children this year with arranging book exchanges, encouraging reading, and assisting with technology during the Battle. A very special thank you to the amazing parents who volunteered to act as coaches and assistant coaches. They attended meetings hosted by the library, facilitated the sharing of books, provided communication among team members and their families, and some even hosted additional practice sessions beyond the school day. Their time and dedication enhanced this experience for the children and was truly appreciated.
For more information on the Battle of the Books, feel free to visit http://hclibrary.org/new-a-main/battle-of-the-books/.

STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK: MAY 3-7
This year for Staff Appreciation Week, the PTA will be buying food and other small gifts for the staff, but we would like your help in showing our staff just how much we appreciate them!
We ask that students and families write notes or cards of appreciation for their teachers and other staff members and deliver them to the school in one of three ways. You can either mail in the notes/cards to the school address, you can drop them off in a collection box that will be in the vestibule at school all week, or if your child is hybrid they can hand it to their teachers. If you wish to celebrate staff in additional ways, many staff members have a "Favorites List" (available on the PTA website) or you can send gift cards to individual staff members (gift cards of $25 or less are allowed). We also ask your help in celebrating other staff members using the following guide per grade:
Kindergarten- Related Arts Teachers, 1st Grade- Administration and Front Office Staff,
2nd Grade- Health Staff and Paraeducators, 3rd Grade- Special Education Staff,
4th Grade- Academic Support and Student Services, and 5th Grade- Custodial Staff and Cafeteria Staff/Monitors. (Names of staff can be found on LES Website.)
Thank you for your help in celebrating our amazing staff!

INFORMATION WORTH REPEATING
Helpful Hints Form - Planning for 2021-2022:
As we get close to the end of this school year, we are in the process of planning for the 2021-22 school year. One important piece of that planning process is input from you about your child.
No one knows a child better than his/her parent(s). With that in mind, I encourage you to complete the Lisbon Elementary Helpful Hints form below. The purpose of this form is for you to share specific information or helpful hints with the staff that will give next year’s teachers some information from you about your child.
When placing students, the staff, and administration utilize a wide range of criteria that are supportive of the Howard County philosophy of heterogeneous grouping. Some of these criteria include, but are not limited to:
- the personality of the child
- the gender balance in each classroom
- math strengths and needs
- written output
- test results
- reading strengths and needs
- special education requirements; IEP goals
- structured versus non-structured needs
- information from previous teachers and school counselor.
Administrators, your child’s current teachers, and your child’s 2021-22 teachers will read the form you fill out. With that in mind, PLEASE DO NOT use this form for any of the following:
- Specific teacher requests
- Comments (positive or negative) about staff members
- Grouping with friends
- Isolating students from other students
Your input on this form will be used in our planning for your child rather than a letter requesting a specific teacher. Your response is OPTIONAL but is a very valuable source of information to the school staff and to the next teacher.
Please fill out and return the below form by May 12th via email to Christine_johnson@hcpss.org.
Thank you for your input and continued support,

GOG allows you to gift any amount minimum of $1 to any LES staff member. The gifts are combined, and the staff pick which gift card they prefer. They also receive a note with every name who gifted to them, but not the amount. You can gift by credit card at Memberhub or print out the form with a check or cash and drop in the PTA drop box at LES, the PTA will add it to their gift of gratitude account.
