Oak Hills Newsletter

Principal's Message
Dear Oak Hills Families,
I had the opportunity to attend the Learning and The Brain Conference last weekend. At this conference, researchers brought educators up to speed on the latest brain research on how we learn and how we can apply those findings in our schools and classrooms. Myths such as certain cognitive abilities being attributed to only one hemisphere of the brain were debunked. There were also presentations that affirmed what I believed. The inquiry based approach such as the engineering design cycle is probably the best way to prepare students for the future. Since 65% of the professions our children will experience have not been invented yet, we must provide our students with the ability to question, try things out or research, create, and come to a solution. The direction we hope to go by combining the Engineering Design Cycle with the Maker Space concept, I think will serve our students well.
Many of the researchers also pointed out play is very important for children. So in the spirit of play and the joy of reading, we will be celebrating Read Across America Day or Dr. Seuss’ Birthday on March 2nd. On this day, students can come to school in pajamas but please make sure they wear proper shoes for recess and PE. We will start the day with an assembly in which we will all recite the Reader’s Oath and enjoy a visit by Cat in the Hat. We will also have guest readers throughout the day. Many classrooms will have read ins and other fun activities to celebrate reading. We will conclude the day with the battle of the books (OBOB) final for our school. I will have details about the OBOB competition in the next newsletter.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Let’s hope for no more snow.
