Counseling News for Wellington Elementary- MAY 2022

It's Almost Summer, Wildcat Families!!!

We hope you're having an amazing spring so far! We're loving this beautiful weather at WES!

April was the final month for the classroom Second Step lessons. There will be no lessons in May because there are field trips, parties, and STAAR testing. This is when we all start wrapping up the year, and we hope that this has been an awesome one for you and your child!

WES Career Day will be on May 19th from 8:00-11:30. We are so grateful to everyone who has volunteered their time to be here on that day to explain to our kiddos all about your profession! THANK YOU SO MUCH! Our school wouldn't be as amazing without your support!

Please have a safe, relaxing, and happy summer! Continue to reach out to us this summer if you need anything! Even in the summer, we are still here to support you!!!!!

Thank you for sharing your kiddos with us!

NO CLASSROOM SECOND STEP CURRICULUM FOR THE MONTH OF MAY! WE FINISHED ON THE LAST WEEK OF APRIL!

  • COUNSELORS WILL BE FINISHING THE CHILD PROTECTION UNIT IN ALL CLASSES AND CONDUCTING AN END-OF-THE-YEAR SURVEY WITH ALL CLASSES!!!

Child Protection Unit and Staying Safe

This is the last month of Child Protection Unit lessons. The goal of this unit is to help students to develop knowledge and skills for protecting themselves from any unsafe and/or abusive situation, both in and out of the classroom. We focus on teaching what is safe and what is unsafe and what to do if you ever find yourself in an unsafe situation. The 3 steps are called the 3 R's:

RECOGNIZE that a situation is unsafe

REFUSE to be involved in an unsafe situation

REPORT any possible unsafe situations to a trusted adult

In addition, we are teaching children about the 8 NEVER-NEVERS. There's a catchy song that goes along with these never-nevers. Below are the 8 Never-Nevers:

1. Never ride on wheels without a helmet.

2. Never touch a dog without asking its owner.

3. Never touch a gun.

4. Never touch sharp tools without the presence of an adult.

5. Never go in a body of water without an adult.

6. Never ride in a car without a seatbelt.

7. Never cross a street without looking both ways.

8. Never play with fire.

If you would like to sing the "8 Never-Nevers" song with your child, here is a link to the song:

The Home Links for each grade level of the CPU unit are listed below. In each grade level link, there is information that details exactly what we will be teaching and how we will be teaching each lesson. This is great to use if you'd like to further discuss with your child what they learned.
