Munz's Weekly Update
Week of April 22
Homework
I saw some great mathematical thinking on last week's homework. I am meeting individually with your child today and tomorrow to talk about the things they did really well and how they could have shown me more information about how they solved the problem.
There are two reasons why I have the children show their thinking with as much detail as possible:
1. The deepest form of understanding and mastery is being able to tell and show someone what you did to solve a problem.
2. Standardized testing that begins next year (and in subsequent years) requires the children to not only give an answer, but also give an EXPLANATION in order to get full credit. Just writing an answer (even if correct) would not be counted as 100% correct.
I am returning everyone's homework from last week tomorrow. On several papers I made notes of what your child told me verbally or questions I had for them. I was actually modeling how they can record their thinking. The goal is that they will begin to record more information in number or word form on their own. Homework calendars and this week's homework problems will be sent home tomorrow as well. My hope is that you can see the feedback I give the children and support them on this week's problems if needed.
Summer Reading/Math Club
It is very important that your child be a kid and enjoy their summer. However, children often lose skills during this time. If you are looking for a low-key, relaxed, and fun option for your child to reinforce their reading and/or math skills this summer, I have attached a form for summer tutoring. My youngest child participated last summer. She always looked forward to going and can't wait to start up again this summer.
The children also brought home Summer Reading Program information from the Hussey Mayfield Library last week. This is a great way to keep them reading!
