Mr. B's Corner

The first third of this school year is now in the rearview mirror. As we begin the second trimester with all students in Extended Flexible Learning (EFL), I thought I would reshare some of Dr. Boatman’s thoughts from her presentation on Executive Functioning and GT kids.


  • Executive Functioning of GT students lags behind average and high achieving students
    • Although GT students are able to take in huge amounts of new information and grasp challenging concepts that bely their age, they often struggle with the executive functioning skills that allow them to organize their learning into completed tasks. Executive Functioning Development in GT kids often lags behind their age peers, thus, we as adults, often have to scaffold these skills (I do->we do->you do).
      • Paying attention- How do we pay attention even if we are not interested?
      • Organizing, planning and prioritizing- How do we set aside time to accomplish our tasks?
      • Starting tasks and staying focused on them to completion- How do we initiate tasks?
      • Understanding different points of view- How do we learn to understand another’s perspective?
      • Regulating emotions- How do we recognize and accept our emotions without letting them dictate our success?
      • Self-monitoring (keeping track of what you're doing)- How do I track my own progress?
  • 93% Rule
    • Perfectionist students need to be given the permission and encouragement to strive for only 93% sometimes on somethings. Dr. Boatman explained that if it takes 2 hours to get to 93%, it often takes another 2 hours to complete the extra 7%. Time can be better spent on other tasks AND emotional turmoil may not be worth the extra effort. She did say, however, that we ought to encourage 100% striving on those things the student shows a passion.
  • Emotional Skin
    • Students who exhibit an emotional intensity are often quick to react emotionally to most stimuli. Dr. Boatman said that these students may need to create an “emotional skin.” For some students this mimics their favorite superhero while others create their own alter-ego Then, when emotional stimuli becomes too much a concerned adult can remind the student of their chosen emotional skin.
  • Underwater Analogy
    • Students who exhibit an intellectual intensity may not respond to external stimulus when they are engaged in their tasks. Dr. Boatman explained that this was akin to the student being 10 feet underwater. A student underwater may not hear, see, of sense anything happening around them. When this student needs to be communicated with, it may take a hand “reaching through the water” to get their attention. One’s voice may not be enough to pull them from the “water.”

Second Trimester Phy Ed/Health Information for Grades 1-8

Hello PE and Health students!


Welcome to the second trimester of the school year! PE and Health assignments will be available after the start of the new calendar year, so please watch for an update on those at the very beginning of January. There will be Take Home Bags to pick up at school with equipment for the PE assignments. Watch for info in the weekly newsletter for guidance on how/when to pick those up at the school.


Until then, please stay active at home! I know it can be tempting to just stay inside, especially as the weather starts getting colder outside, but going outside for fresh air and sunlight is really important. You can also stay active indoors by being creative - do some exercise videos on YouTube, make an obstacle course in your house, run up and down the stairs, you get the idea!

Lighthouse Grades

Trimester 1 final grades will be available beginning Wednesday, December 16 and can be accessed through Campus Parent Portal. Watch a video tutorial on how to access your student’s report card.


1st-8th grade may receive (NY, OnG, P, A):

  • NY: This means “NOT YET.” Student has not met their negotiated work plan goals for the term nor have they finished a course.
  • Ongoing: This means that the student has not completed the course, and a plan is in place to meet the course goals. (This occurs in Rosetta Stone and ALEKS most often when students are working to earn High School credit. This work often takes more than a term to complete).
  • P: This means “PASS.” Students have met their daily work goals and shown growth.
  • A: On occasion, a younger student may meet the “Essential Learning Outcomes” for High School Credit. This happens quite often in Rosetta Stone and ALEKS Math and rarely in Art, Literature, Writing Plan, and Inquiry. (The Lighthouse does not award high school credits to our younger learners (1st-8th grade) unless they receive an A as we do not want to hurt their High School GPA before they are mature enough to risk the consequences. Once they take a concurrent class at the high school, however, they are under the high school rules.)


9th and 10th Grade

Our 9th and 10th graders will be awarded marks based upon a traditional grading system (A, B, C, D, and F). Students will be awarded credit for A, B, C, and D quality work. An F will not earn credit and will require a student to repeat the learning. Going forward, this change will help our students better align with expectations from the MN Department of Education and College Admissions Departments.

11th-12th Grade learners may receive (NY, OnG, B, A): These students will continue to work from our old grading policy so as not to change expectations during their matriculation.

  • NY: This means “NOT YET.” The student has not met their goals for the term.
  • Ongoing: This means that the student has not completed the course, and a plan is in place to meet the course goals. (This occurs in Rosetta Stone and ALEKS most often when students are working to earn High School credit. This work often takes more than a term to complete).
  • B: This is the lowest grade offered for credit at the Lighthouse for 11th-12th grade students only. This means students have met the “Essential Learning Outcomes,” but have not gone above the base requirements and sought depth and complexity in their work.
  • A: This is the highest grade offered for credit at the Lighthouse. This means that students have met the “Essential Learning Outcomes,” and have achieved above the base requirements through depth and complexity.
  • 11th-12th Grade students may choose to earn A, B, C, D, and F grades to ensure they are awarded credit even if they receive a C or a D.
  • IMPORTANT Reminder - 9th-12th Grade Students do not receive a P (PASS).

Continue to report COVID-19 symptoms, positive cases during distance learning

Although our learning model has shifted to distance learning for the time being, it is vital that you continue to call the attendance line at 763-600-5209 and press 1 to report any positive cases of COVID-19, close contact exposures to any positive cases of COVID-19, and signs or symptoms of illness that you may have in your household.


This information allows us to prioritize safety when we transition back into the hybrid learning environment by adhering to Minnesota Department of Health guidelines for quarantine and isolation, thereby limiting the spread of the virus.


As a reminder, Minnesota also has testing availability. Here is some additional information about available testing:


1. At-home COVID-19 saliva testing - Minnesota offers free, at-home COVID-19 saliva testing for people who believe they need to be tested, with or without symptoms. Right now, families can order up to five test kits per household. Families will be asked if they have insurance, but the state will cover the costs for any uninsured or underinsured families. You should not receive a bill using this testing option. Order your at-home test here.


2. COVID-19 community testing sites - All COVID-19 testing is free at Minnesota Department of Health community testing events. We are always planning more community testing events across the state, working together with communities to make sure everyone can get tested. Tests are free for everyone, and no identification or insurance is required.

The Spring Lake Park Youth Lacrosse Association invites families to register their students for the upcoming spring 2021 lacrosse season.
