How Can We Help Our Children "See" the World?
This week is Spring Break for most colleges and students are traveling throughout the US and the world. (My own two children are in Israel and Ireland this week as a part of college and career programs.) How can we help our children become more globally minded and "see" the rest of the world? 1. Help them learn about new places. There are such abundant resources for discovering new cultures. Television streaming services offer so many shows by National Geographic and Smithsonian that help us see what it is like to live and travel in other countries. Obviously, lots of adventure books are set in unique locales. When you have friends and family visit new places, invite them to tell you and your child about their experiences. 2. Model taking a risk. Whether it might be visiting a Greek restaurant or shopping in a Hispanic grocery store, we want to help our children have different kinds of experiences. It could be attending a unique sporting event (like lacrosse) or going to a hear an African musical group. Winthrop University provides a variety of programs for our community that are often free to the public. There are also festivals and fairs in the greater Charlotte area that represent cultures from across the world. Think about places and events you've always wanted to experience and take a chance on making that happen. 3. Look for travel opportunities. We may have situations that come up through our workplace to take our children to new countries and places. Non-profit organizations where we volunteer may sponsor trips to serve others across the US and overseas. As our children become older, they may have opportunities to travel as a part of their studies and classes. Many high school and collegiate extracurricular clubs and sports teams promote trips both in and out of the country and they assist students with fundraising to offset costs. We have been surprised at the opportunities our children found simply because they were on the lookout for them. Some of our most treasured memories with our children have been trips we took with them. Travel helps all of us see life beyond our own perspective. It encourages us to stand in others' shoes and be empathetic. It is challenging as a parent to "let go" a little to send your child out into the world to see what it is really like. That process of fostering their future independence begins now as we walk and talk with them each day. Let's help them see that there is a great big world out there and we want them to discover it for themselves (and with us, too).
Strength and Blessings to You,
Mr. Maness
