Fall Semester 2012 - Mrs. Dixon

Course Description

This course will trace the roots and development of American popular music from the 1900’s to today. Students will explore a variety of media including books, videos, song lyrics and the music of the period. Some time will be spent studying the social issues reflected in and influencing the songs of the era. Musical elements such as form and structure will be studied. Types of music and styles will be analyzed. Topics will include: rock roots, rhythm & blues, early vocal groups, crossovers and covers, British Invasion, Motown, soul music, folk-rock, singer-song writers and more.

What do you need?

  • A textbook will be available/provided for you (you won't take it out of the classroom)
  • Have something to take notes with/on (either a notebook or folder/binder)

What will we be doing?

Through lectures, discussions, readings and listenings, we'll study popular music from the early 1900s to current.

Grading will be done through homework assignments, projects, assessments and a final exam

  • Formative assessments will be given at the end of every chapter/section
  • Summative assessments will be given at the end of every three chapters/sections

Some projects throughout the semester...

Billboard Fridays

You will be responsible for selecting a song (from our wik) from the decade we're learning about, researching information on that song (I'll give you a worksheet) and then presenting the information and a recording (audio and/or video) to the class or posting to Edmodo

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction

Every spring, artists/bands are inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. After studying the criteria for induction, you will choose and artist to induct, write a business letter, and then present to the class

Top 20 Countdown

Have you watched VH1's "Top 20 Countown" or "TRL" (when it was) on MTV? In small groups, you will create a program announcing the "Top 20 Billboard Hits" from a specific week and year

Field Trip?

Hopefully, toward the end of the semester, we will visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

100 Riffs (A Brief History of Rock and Roll)...how many can you name?
