Red Storm Forecast
Stonybrook Middle School December 2018
Message from Mr. Day
Hello Stonybrook Middle School Families!
As we head towards the end of our first semester, it provides some time to reflect on our school year thus far and provide reminders for a strong finish over the next few weeks. We have been working hard to inform students of the importance of great attendance and acknowledge them for maintaining 96% (missing 7 days or less a year) or better attendance.
While we had a very strong start to the school year, since the return from fall break, we have observed our attendance rate declining. Our goal is to provide support to students and families in any way we can. Please feel free to always contact us to discuss any challenges your family may be facing that is impacting your child's educational journey. Often times we can assist in some way that eases the challenges a bit, resulting in some great changes.
As you support your child on the three basic factors of school success - great attendance, performing at their academic best, and working to build a positive community of learners - we continue to remind them of their amazing potential.
We hope that the upcoming holiday break provides an opportunity to realize the many joys and blessings that we may take for granted. We hope that is filled with laughter and time with family and friends. We look forward to seeing all of our scholars when we return on January 7th, rested and ready to take the next step forward!
Go Red Storm!
Mr. Nathan Day
A word from our Assistant Principal, Ms. True
With only three weeks left this term, encourage your child to finish the first semester strong by attending school every day. Students having 96% or better attendance for November were invited to attend a dance on Friday, December 7th to celebrate. Our friendly Staff vs Students attendance competition from October was won by the staff. Ask your child who won the November challenge! Let Children Know that Good Attendance Is Important: Attendance is a parent and student responsibility. Let your child know that you think attending school daily is important. Show them you are interested in their school activities and tell them that you want them to do well in school. Good attendance habits start at an early age. Make sure your child goes to school regularly and on time. This helps them develop a positive view of school and the importance of attendance. Discuss with your student that arriving to school on time and to report to class when dropped off. Become involved in your child’s school life and school activities. Take an interest in your child’s school work. Check homework for accuracy and completeness. Read the school newsletter. Post the school calendar and notes on the refrigerator, or other prominent location to highlight school activities and important student information. Do not provide inappropriate excuses for your child to miss school. Do not let them take time off from school for minor ailments – particularly those which would not prevent you from going to work. Don’t expect or let older children stay home from school to babysit younger siblings. Set good examples and enforce rules. Speak well of the school and support school staff. Make a contract with your child to improve his/her attendance. Reward positive improvements.

Social Studies News!
7th Grade Social Studies:
We just began our unit on the world's major religions. In this unit, we examine five of the most practiced religions from around the world - Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. We examine important principles, practices, important figures, and holy texts from each of the religions. Students will then be able to identify key similarities and differences between those religions. We will also examine how these religions affect our world today, making ties to current events and modern global issues.

Nicholson's Notes.. from the counselor's office
“Starfish Initiative is a college access and readiness program serving economically disadvantaged high school students in Marion County, Indiana.
We believe that mentoring is the key to improving the educational attainment and future of today’s youth. To that end, we match every student in the Starfish program with a college-educated, volunteer adult mentor whose job is to help walk their student into college. Thanks to the guidance of their mentors, 100 percent of the Starfish Scholars who completed the four-year program have graduated from high school and 98% have been accepted by colleges or universities across Indiana — and beyond.”

High School counselors visited Stonybrook MIddle School on Monday 11/12 & Tuesday 11/13. The counselors presented information to 8th graders about high school requirements and graduation requirements. Students also learned about what electives are available for 9th graders. All students were expected to complete a course request worksheet and return to the counselors. All students were given a copy of their worksheets to take home and share with parents.
IF a student needs to make a course selection change - please write the change on the copy and return to Stonybrook to Mrs. Nicholson.
ALL final schedule change requests are due to the middle school counselors by March 1st, 2019.

Let's fight the flu together!
Your decision to get the flu shot goes well beyond you. It also affects the many lives you touch...
Influenza is a contagious disease of the respiratory tract (nose, throat, and lungs) that can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia and the worsening of other health conditions. Flu symptoms may include fever, headache, extreme tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and muscles aches. The best way to protect your family from new influenza strains is to get vaccinated each year.
The top five most virus-contaminated areas in the home are:
1. Telephones (have you cleaned your cell phone lately)
2. Appliances such as the refrigerator and microwave
3. Faucets
4. Light
5. TV remotes
Wash hands frequently, do the elbow cough, and disinfect surfaces at home, school and work.
