Next week's motto is:
I don't trade what I want most for what I want now.
This week the focus is on the ability to delay gratification. James Clear wrote a helpful article about Delayed Gratification. This link will take you to the article. The headline reads:
40 Years of Stanford Research Found That People
With This One Quality, Are More Likely to Succeed.
What is that one quality? The ability to delay gratification. Being able to put off immediate gratification for something more important later is a crucial component to success.
The best news about teaching your child how to delay gratification is that it can be learned. Just as we can increase our strength at the gym, we can improve our ability to delay gratification. There is a great article that details this a bit more in the Business Insider entitled, How a Group of Children Revealed the Secrets to Success in Life.
You can help your child understand the concept of delayed gratification by asking, "Would this make your future-self happy?" When they think about that question, it may help them connect to what is important to them down the road, so they are willing to work for it now.
Keeping what you want in mind is the first step to attaining it. When you see your child making short-term decisions, help them connect to what they want more, rather than what they want now. It can also help to share with them how, when you take action and get your work done; you often feel better because contributing to your future success usually feels better than avoiding your current obligations.
Here are some picture books that can help explain this better for younger children:
- The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss
- Someday by Eileen Spinelli
- Joe the Monkey Saves for a Goal by John Lanza & Marylin Walton
- Here is the link for the Student Newsletter.
Wishing you a wonderful week,
