Happy Friday, Lil Steamer Families!
April 24, 2020
From the desk of: Principal Hoese
Dear Lil Steamer Families,
As we near the end of the fourth week of Remote Learning, I want to take a moment to thank you for your efforts on the homefront in supporting our learning efforts. The situation is not ideal and we miss seeing our students every day. While we continue to learn how to support learning in a new environment, families have been required to find a new normal at home. Please know that while the building is closed, our faculty and staff continue to work hard to support your efforts. Do not hesitate to reach out to any of us with your concerns so that we may help your family dynamic and our students be successful.
CURBSIDE PICKUP SERVICE FOR STUDENT CLASSROOM BELONGINGS
Teachers are gathering student property and contents from their respective classrooms this week. Starting on Monday, April 27, families can utilize the FES curbside pickup service to retrieve these items. All contents have been bundled into a trash bag and will be delivered to your vehicle without you having to exit. Hours are from 8:30 AM to noon Monday through Friday. Families may pick up belongings for other families. If the pickup hours do not work for your family, please contact the FES main office at 815-589-2911 and we can make other arrangements.
LIBRARY ITEMS
Any student who has library books or materials out currently may have them returned during our curbside service hours from 8:30 AM to noon Monday through Friday. Please return these materials as soon as possible so staff may inventorize items accordingly.
GIFT CARD STUDENT INCENTIVE
Each week, students who complete all of their remote learning work for their respective teachers will have their name entered into a drawing to receive a $5 gift card which will be mailed to their home. For example, students who completed all of last week’s (Week 3) remote learning work have been entered for the Week 4 drawing. Drawing winners will be announced during tomorrow’s morning announcements and then the gift cards will be mailed out. This week’s $5 gift card is for Steam Anchor!
MEAL ASSISTANCE
If your family is in need of meal assistance at this time, regardless of whether you qualify for free-and-reduced meals, please complete the following form: https://forms.gle/iwR9hr79sjNaDMnb9 - if you have previously completed the form, you do not need to complete it again.
#WEDOTHEWORK,
JAGH
From the desk of: Counselor Mrs. Meumann
In these challenging times, we are all thinking about what we would like to do when life returns to normal. I found this activity created by a mom in the UK that I thought was worth sharing.
Katie Eborall is inspiring kids to dream about post-coronavirus adventures by having them drop notes into a “Someday Soon Jar.”
“We’ve started a new thing in our house today and are sharing it in case anyone else wants to try,” Katie Eborall wrote on Facebook. “Every time we wish we could do something, go somewhere, treat ourselves, see someone we love, visit a new place, invite people to visit us, we’re going to write it down on a post it note and put it in a jar.”
Earth Day!
Students from 1B celebrated Earth Day in many ways!!! Happy 50th Earth Day!!!!!
McComBEE Buzz
I hope all is well with you and your families. I appreciate all the work
and patience you have had over the past month or so. I have attached my
annual McComBEE Buzz Reading Program for this summer. I want to send it
along so that you may include it in the e-learning documents as well as
any packets that are going home to elementary students. Due to COVID-19
we are not able to print these off in Springfield like we have in the
past but I am happy to assist in getting this to students. If you need
printed copies please let us know.
As you are all aware parents and students alike are looking for ways to
pass the time during the 'Shelter In'...please feel free to get creative
with the program and share on social media to target elementary aged
students.

UPSTART
Dear Families,
We have recently been told about a grant program in Illinois available to 4 year old children, the year prior to Kindergarten. UPSTART is a free in-home Kindergarten readiness program. UPSTART is done 15-20 minutes, 5 days at home with a parent/guardian and promotes a high level of parent/child engagement. UPSTART is in its 12th year and is in 15 states across the country. This can be used as a supplement to Fulton Blended Preschool and would be a great option for those 4 year olds who are put on our waitlist.
WHAT FAMILIES WILL RECEIVE
- A FREE Dell laptop for each family, software, and FREE internet (if you don't have it and qualify). If minimum usage is met, families will get to keep the computer after the program.
- Research-based, efficacious, award-winning reading and math/science instruction delivered to each child at home with a parent/guardian for 15-20 minutes daily.
- Weekly family support through a family education liaison to encourage the family through literacy knowledge, preparation for supporting a school-age child, and usage tracking. This personalized support is available in over 20 languages.
Illinois UPSTART will begin September 2020 and run until June 2021. Please see the attached flyer for information on how to register your child for this program. REGISTRATION IS ONLY OPEN UNTIL MAY 30TH, 2020.
