Principal's Update
What a great week to be a Hornet! We are finally into what seems to be a groove as we have a full week behind us. Things are starting to get into a groove and we have a busy week next week.
Monday is Parent-Teacher Conferences. In the elementary, Jr. Kinder - 5th Grade, teachers will reach out to parents/guardians to schedule a conference either Monday, September 19th or Monday, October 17th. The middle school is open house style, please come visit your child's teachers at your convenience.
Picture Day is Tuesday, September 20th. A flyer/packet was sent home with students that contained ordering information for pictures. Remember to dress your best!
On Thursday, September 22nd, we have our first school dance for 5th-8th Graders. The dance begins at 7:00 and ends at 9:00, please make sure you have a pick-up ride planned when the dance ends. If you are interested in donating snacks for the dance, please bring them to the office this week.
Friday is our first Friday Opportunity for 5th-8th Graders. This is a chance to get caught up on any late or missing homework. This is also a great time to get extra one-on-one help with a teacher. Please see below for more information.
Please make sure you are checking your child backpack for notes from the teacher or office. I hope everyone has a great weekend, please find time to spend with your family and enjoy the nice weather.

r. Kindergarten/Kindergarten and 6th Grade vaccination requirement deadlines will be quickly approaching. Please bring in updated immunization records or notify the nurse (Seanna.Hewett@k12.sd.us) of your student's upcoming appointment date.
If your child does not have a primary care provider, you may call the Custer County Nurse at (605) 673-2847 to schedule an appointment. Because the South Dakota Department of Health supplies childhood vaccines for children eligible for the federal Vaccines for Children Program the following conditions apply to eligible children:
- You cannot be charged for the vaccine. However, you may be asked to pay a small administration fee, which is capped at $20.73 per injection.
- This administration fee must be waived if you are unable to pay.
- You may be required to pay an office visit fee to receive the vaccine.
Dress Code Policy (JFCA)
Students need to dress appropriately for the weather and activities in school. Clothes that do not fit or create a distraction from the education of our students will not be allowed. Examples of inappropriate dress or grooming include: undergarments that are visible, see-through clothing, spaghetti straps, strapless, bandanas, visors, halter tops and half shirts that expose skin on the stomach, extremely short skirts or shorts, bare feet, chains, pants that don’t fit and are not worn at the waist, and clothes that display drug, alcohol, tobacco, or gang affiliation/symbols, are inappropriate.
Hats are not to be worn in the building except on approved days.
Any questionable clothing that is identified by school staff will be reported to the principal and handled at the principal’s discretion.
We live in an area that typically has cold weather and weather conditions that can change quickly. Students are expected to be outside before school and during recess. Students need to dress for the weather.

Counselor's Corner
It is the fourth week of school but only our second full week! Students are doing a great job at adjusting to the schedule and procedures of school as well as relearning, and following expectations.
Classroom Guidance Lessons this week focused on our Hornet Value of committing to being Safe. How we are safe in the Learning Commons, Classroom, Hallway, Lunchroom, and Playground.
During classroom lessons, this round of students had their first Second Step Lessons.
Junior Kindergarten began learning about their focusing skills for learning and how we learn to listen.
Second and Third Grade explored that trying new things are not always easy, but the more we practice the better we become. This is teaching the foundain of Growth Mindset and being Resilient. When we try new things, we also change our brains and how we think about our new tasks.
Fifth Grade is learning about setting goals. In making a goal for oneself it is important the goal is specific, challenging, and doable.
Sixth Grade reflected on times someone helped them, and how helping others makes you feel good by spreading kindness.
Eighth Grade is learning about the different things that make up their personal identity. One's identity is influenced by many things, as we are all unique. Some examples of factors that influence us are culture, family, interests, gender, personality, roles, skills, values, race, and religion.
Thursday, September 22nd we are starting our Backpack Program. The program is free and designed to provide non-perishable food every Thursday to children that would benefit from supplemental nourishment over the weekend. Bags are dispensed in a discreet and caring manner. Please e-mail Keersten.Graveman@k12.sd.us with your child's name and grade level if you'd like them to participate in the blessings of the Backpack Program.
