Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

A congenital syndrome that is caused by a mother consuming alcohol while she is pregnant.

Cause

*Consuming alcohol during pregnancy

Symptom

  • low birth weight
  • organ dysfunction
  • failure to thrive
  • development delay


  • small eyelid openings
  • short, upturned nose
  • long upper lip
  • reduced size of head

Secondary Conditions

  • mental health problems
  • alcohol and drug problems
  • trouble with law

Prevention

  • Don't drink alcohol if you are trying to get pregnant or have the possibility to get pregnant

Treatment

  • special education teacher
  • physical and occupational therapists
  • medication
