Rocket Review
Week of February 28, 2020
Last Week of February!
The second page of the calendar has come to an end and we are heading into March, one of the busiest months of the year! Not only do we have March is Reading Month activities each day, but we also have a music concert, PBIS assembly, Kindergarten Open House, St. Patrick's Day, and lots of learning in the classrooms!
If you haven't heard the good news, Morgan Elementary is receiving some new technology from the 2018 bond initiative, supported by our local communities! This week we arrived back from mid-winter break to find four portable charging carts in the media center. They are awaiting 29-30 new laptops each for our Morgan students to use throughout the building. In addition, classrooms in grades 3-6 will be receiving two additional classroom laptops, bringing the total number of classroom laptops to 8 per classroom in grades 3-6. Our K-2 classrooms already have 8 laptops per classroom, thanks to our PTO purchase two years ago, plus they have 6 iPads each for students to use. Staff and students are excited about the upcoming arrival of this additional technology for daily classroom use.
The end of February also brings Progress Reports for the 3rd Card Marking. If you have a student in grades third through sixth, please check your child's Power School account for an update on progress in the classroom at the half way point of the 3rd Marking Period. If you have not set up your Power School Parent Portal account, please do so on a laptop/desktop computer prior to setting up the Power School app on your smart phone. If you need the sign up information, please contact the Main Office. You will need to pick up the initial directions and sign for the temporary username/password at the Main Office.
We stayed inside today during lunch recess due to the low wind chills. While we have some fresh snow, warmer temperatures are coming in the first week of March. Perhaps the ground hog was correct in his prediction of an early spring this year. Get outside with your kids as the weather starts to warm up and enjoy the change in seasons as we head into spring.
Have a good week,
Mrs. Lasky
March is Reading Month Activity Calendar
Jimmy John's Challenge & Hot Wings Challenge!
- Read 4 books at your grade or Lexile level and get FREE tickets to a baseball game at Jimmy John's Field. Students who earn the tickets will be honored at the game!
- Read 3 or more books at your grade or Lexile level and attend the Hot Wings Challenge assembly at the end of the month. Mr. D, Mr. Mirovsky, and Mr. Hall will be going head-to- head in a hot wings eating challenge to see who can take the heat!
Classroom teachers will have the baseball posters for students to track their progress. Reading three books for the Jimmy John's challenge counts as three for the Hot Wings Assembly.

Please leave toys at home
In the past week, we have had:
- spilled milk due to toy spinning tops running on the lunchroom tables
- lost stuffed toys causing tears
- students in disagreements over "borrowed" or "traded" toys from home
- stuffed toys taking up room at the lunchroom table
Please leave toys at home. If toys are brought to school and cause a distraction, disruption, or disagreement, they will be given to main office for parents to come and pick up. This includes trading cards, plush/stuffed toys, dolls, spinning tops, cars/trucks, mini skateboards, any electronic toys, etc.

Eisenhower NHS Tutoring
Parents may register their students by submitting a request located on our website:
http://ikenhs.weebly.com/eagle-tutoring.html.
This will allow us to prepare adequate tutors for each subject matter. We ask that parents complete the form by Sunday night each week in order to allow us to organize the correct number of NHS students.
Their goal is to provide a safe and productive environment for both students needing help and our NHS members offering their service. Additionally, a staff member will be on site every week checking in registered students and monitoring the sessions.
Looking for Lunch Monitors!
Tuesday and Wednesday are in NEED!
If you would be interested in helping in the lunchroom, please fill out a lunch monitor application with EduStaff. A link to the application can be found below. You will need to create an account, enter your information, complete some online training modules, and have a background check with finger prints. Then you can work as many lunch days as you would like and be paid for your help!
Several of our lunch monitors also complete additional training in EduStaff to serve as substitute paraprofessionals in our building. If you are interested in becoming a substitute paraprofessional, please use the EduStaff application process below.
If you have questions about becoming a lunch monitor or the online process, please contact Melissa Roth in our main office at 586-797-5800.

UCS News and Updates
Make it Count for Students: Participate in 2020 Census
Utica Community Schools is joining area communities in helping to share information about the importance of participating in the 2020 Census.
Participating in the census survey will have a positive impact on the resources that the communities receive from the federal government, and local programs for students is no exception. The census data is used to determine federal funding levels by determining the number of residents and the needs of the community.
The census also provides funding to address key community needs for road improvements, housing, block grants and student college loans.
Census materials are scheduled to be mailed in mid-March with information on how to complete the questionnaire online, by phone or mail. More information is available at http://census.gov/.
Important Links for Student/Family Health
Michigan Department of Health/CDC Links
We want to share with you a series of important links that have been created related to student and family health.
Both the Center for Disease Control and the Michigan Department of Health have created fact sheets regarding the 2019 Novel Coronavirus.
The information is available at: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/index.html - Center for Disease Control and https://www.michigan.gov/mdhhs/0,5885,7-339-71550_5104_97675---,00.html - Michigan Department of Public Health.
As always, we encourage students to practice healthy habits such as proper hand washing and coughing or sneezing into a sleeve or tissue, as well as staying home when sick, to prevent germs from spreading.
