Kendallvue Community Updates
January 16 - 29, 2023
I hope everyone is enjoying the three day weekend. It was a busy and productive week this past week. I would like to share some updates from this week.
I shared our enrollment updates with our School Accountability Committee (SAC) and our enrollment numbers are looking good. We discussed budget priorities and classroom size continues to be a value we all share. We will continue the discussion in our next meeting on February 1 before the PTA meeting.
In this newsletter, there is important information about some changes in our PBIS program. In an effort to more effectively progress monitor our behavior systems, we are re-launching our refocus forms. The form by itself is not a consequence, but an opportunity to reflect and redirect. Over the coming weeks, our leadership team will be able to identify trends and patterns in the data. This information will inform potential professional learning and other ways to ensure learning is at the forefront.
The social and emotional well-being of our students is important. As a result, we are using the Social Skills Improvement System to help screen our students social-emotional competencies. Jeffco schools does this district-wide and it is used three times throughout the year. This information helps us identify interventions and supports for students. Families may choose to opt out if you wish. You may use this form and return it to your teacher if you are choosing to opt out.
Finally, make sure to mark February 10 on your calendar! Our Watch DOGS are sponsoring the dance. We are excited for the Kendallvue Family Valantine's Dance. Dust off your dancing shoes and join us for a fun evening of dancing and celebrating!
Cheers,
Bruce Lindsey

What is PBIS?
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based, tiered framework for supporting students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. When implemented with fidelity, PBIS improves social emotional competence, academic success, and school climate. It also improves teacher health and wellbeing. It is a way to create positive, predictable, equitable and safe learning environments where everyone thrives.
What does PBIS look like at Kendallvue?
At Kendallvue we HOWL and have a behavior matrix based on HOWL that has the expected behaviors throughout the students day (in the bathroom, hallways, lunch room, at recess, and in the classroom).
What does it mean to HOWL? Here is our behavior matrix
Students earn paws based on their positive behaviors listed in the matrix. They then can use those paws to either get something at the paw trolley or earn a weekly prize
When a student doesn’t show the expected behavior they will receive a refocus form
What is a refocus form?
We learn from reflecting on experiences, good and bad. A refocus form is an effective tool to use when a student is displaying a behavior that doesn’t align with HOWL. They are used to help correct those behaviors and reflect. They are not a consequence but can be paired with one.
We have transitioned to a new form that your student might bring home if asked to complete them. This is an opportunity to explore with your student what they could have done differently and what they can do next time. Please reach out to the teacher listed on the refocus form if you have questions about the specific refocus form your student completed.
