Hello Waldo Students!

Thanks for making this an amazing school year despite all the difficulties. You have grown in ways that could not have been imagined. You have learned to be independent. Your technical expertise and computer skills will take you far. Your problem-solving skills can be used in all areas of your life. And your patience…your patience and understanding with everything that has occurred this past year has made you a much better person (no matter how many times I kicked myself out of class, you were still there when I came back!) Keep in mind that these skills will help you in the future to tackle whatever may come your way! This year has been anything but normal, but you have shown that you can handle whatever comes your way. Be strong, help each other, and remember to smile! I will miss you! Enjoy your summer!

Mrs. Denovellis

To All My 8C Darlings,

What a year, right?!?!

So much I can say but will try and keep it short.

So many of you were absolutely amazing this year!

You made the best of a difficult situation and proved that you are unstoppable!

I am soo proud of all you did and am excited to see what you will keep accomplishing moving forward. There is nothing you can't do. Never let anyone tell you otherwise.

Remember that no matter what, I will always be here for anything you may need.

All you need to do is ask. I will miss our dance parties and our remote laughs.

Have an amazing summer and an even more amazing high school career!

I love you all! Yes, I said it again: I love you!

Wishing you nothing but the best.

Live, Love, Laugh,

I want to wish all Waldo 6th graders a safe and enjoyable Summer Break! This year, you were asked to do something that no young person has ever been asked to do. You had to learn from home, use technology like never before, and become self-disciplined. These are all strengths to carry with you onto 7th grade when once again you will be asked to step out of your comfort zones and move forward with life. Though it all, we will do it together. I look forward to meeting so many of you in person!

Mr. Rathje

Dear Team 8C,

What a year! Congratulations on completing one of the most unique years we have ever seen. You have done a wonderful job of learning new skills and coping with each new situation you were given. While I might not recognize all of your faces, since some of them I have never seen except for your school picture, you all have a special place in my heart as we shared this experience together. I wish you all the best in your high school career, and look forward to hearing about your new experiences!

I will miss you all,

Mrs. Samp

The History of Memorial Day

Memorial Day honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.

It is observed on the last Monday of May, it was once held on May 30th.

Memorial Day was first called Decoration Day.

It was declared a federal holiday in 1971, and this created a three-day weekend for federal employees.

Memorial Day is often known as the beginning of the summer.

Each year, a national moment of remembrance is to take place at 3 PM local time on Memorial Day.

In 1966, Waterloo, New York was named the birthplace of Memorial Day. This is where an annual event was hosted that residents decorated graves of soldiers with flowers and flags.

Red poppies are used to commemorate fallen soldiers. This idea came from the poem In Flander's Field written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae in 1915.

In Flander's Field by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

IN FLANDERS FIELD THE POPPIES BLOW

BETWEEN THE CROSSES, ROW ON ROW,

THAT MARK OUR PLACE; AND IN THE SKY

THE LARKS, STILL BRAVELY SINGING, FLY

SCARCE HEARD AMID THE GUNS BELOW.

WE ARE THE DEAD. SHORT DAYS AGO

WE LIVED, FELT DAWN, SAW SUNSET GLOW,

LOVED AND WERE LOVED, AND NOW WE LIE,

IN FLANDERS FIELDS.

TAKE UP OUR QUARREL WITH THE FOE:

TO YOU FROM FAILING HANDS WE THROW

THE TORCH; BE YOURS TO HOLD IT HIGH.

IF YE BREAK FAITH WITH US WHO DIE

WE SHALL NOT SLEEP, THOUGH POPPIES GROW

IN FLANDERS FIELD.
