On behalf of Governing Board and the SCEC Administrative Team, I would like to welcome everyone back to a new and exciting school year. I would like to take a moment, to introduce the Central Office staff. These individuals have been assigned very important task to complete in the 2023 school year that will elevate our district to excellence.

Dr. Javier Abrego - Superintendent of Schools

Ms. Christina Gutierrez - Director of Elementary Ed.

Ms. Lela Simmons - Chief Financial Officer

Dr. Marlon Mitchell - Director of Human Resources

Ms. Tamara Pol - Director of Special Education

Ms. Cynthia Castro - Director of Federal Projects

Ms. Xochitl Medina - Director of English Language Learners

School City of East Chicago was the first district in Indiana to implement the Beyond Textbooks Curriculum Framework. I want to thank all of our staff for trying something new with open arms, and for implementing Beyond Textbooks with fidelity. Also, for welcoming the Vail USD to East Chicago.

Beyond Textbooks helps us define which standards are the most important, it also indicates when to teach each standard, how to teach a standard, as well as how to assess mastery.

We are starting the second semester of the school year. Please make sure your child(ren) come to school on time and prepared. Please do not drop off your students earlier than the time specified by your school principal.

Remember to always check the district website for all updated and new information at

Holiday Dinner Drive Thru

SCEC held its annual Holiday Dinner Drive Thru on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at EC Central HS from 12 to 2 pm or while supplies last. It was a huge success! Over 1000 meals were served and we finished about 1 pm and a box of Lysol Wipes were given to each family. Each child present received a backpack with school supplies and a hat, gloves and/or scarf. Huge Thank You to BPAAN for their donation. Santa Clause, his Elf and the Cardinal Mascot were present to greet families. The Harbor Pentecostal Church and the McKinley Elementary School Cheerleaders performed as well. It could not have been done without the help of all the volunteers Teacher Liaisons, Bilingual Family Coordinators, National Honor Society, Student Government, Facilities, Transportation, some athletes, and JROTC. Thank you to all the administrators present: Abe Brown, Linda Padilla, Rasheeda Green, Daria Rancifer, Aaron Carter, and Michelle Onda/daughter,.

"Spanish Club" Posadas

The Spanish Club at EC Central HS led by sponsor Sasha Tinajero held a Posadas. Students and staff came out to support and contribute to this memorable experience. The Posadas is one of many events that they have held and hope to continue to do more events like these.

The Posadas is a nine day celebration before Christmas. Each night a procession is formed showing Joseph and Mary's journey trying to find a place to stay. Every night ends with kids hitting a pinata to receive either the candy or fruit inside the pinata.

Student Government

Students from Mr. Lane's Student Government delivered candy bags to every student at EC Central HS. (Almost 1,000 bags) The bags were put together by donations from the students, SOME teachers, and a generous donation from the City of East Chicago. The students spent many hours preparing the gifts and it was a great day spreading holiday cheer before continuing final exams. #WeREC
