The West

A region of beauty

The West

The region of the West has many defining characteristics. There are 13 states considered in this west, Alaska, Hawaii, California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Nevada. All of these states contribute to the overall idea and perception of the Western United States.

Industries and Economics

Water in states like California, Arizona, and New Mexico is a vital resource to the many droughts experienced in these states. However, in other states like Oregon it rains regularly enough to create lush forests. The western region of the United states is also fairly rich in natural resources. In the 1800s, gold was found in and attracted prospectors to the west. Huge mining companies became very successful because they had the equipment to reach deep in the earth. Deposits of natural gas and oil are also found in the west. Alaska's economy was transformed by the discovery of oil in the 1960s. Forestry and commercial fishing are other successful businesses in the west. Nearly half of the nation's construction lumber is harvested from the forests of the Pacific Northwest. Billions of tons of fish are caught in the waters off Alaska, Hawaii, and other Pacific Coast states.

People,culture, and History

The west grew exponentially during the gold rush because people sought to start a new life and to find a fortune. Once the Continental Rail Road was constructed in 1869 the travel cost decreased to one dollar. People jumped on the opportunity to move west. Due to the harsh climate however, people chose to settle in cities instead of the countryside. Los Angeles was a city that has grown very much in the past due to the movement of people. In the west people have been able to develop a culture of their own. The movie industry known as Hollywood has become very successful and has made Los Angeles an iconic American city. Cities like Los Angeles have hinterlands all over the nation. The west is the newest region of the United States because the states are younger than those found east. Alaska and Hawaii are the newest states to join the Union. Hawaii in August 21, 1959 and Alaska in January 3, 1959. Although these states are relatively newer than others, they have experienced their fair share of historical events. For example, the attack on Pearl Harbor took place on December 7th, 1941. This attack was the deciding factor in the decision for the United States to finally join the Allies in World War II.
