Santa’s MakerSpace Workshop

K-5 students took the pledge as Honorary Elves to problem-solve for Santa on Christmas Eve. From building shelters for elves who fell off Santa’s sleigh to a marble-run reindeer race to rocket ship made from magformers to retrieve a rogue elf, students created all kinds of structures and inventions.

The Monrovia Elementary Student Council held a cereal drive over the past few weeks for House of the Harvest. They were able to collect more than 100 boxes of cereal to donate! Members also volunteered at House of the Harvest on Saturday morning.

Members of the Monrovia Choir visited Millenium Nursing Home and the Tut Fann Veterans Home on December 7th. Students visited residents, dropped off items they collected during a service project, and performed some Holiday songs.

Congratulations to our Basketball Teams! They have been on a winning streak lately. All four of them got a W on Dec. 13!!!

Scholars' Bowl

Monrovia Scholars' bowl team won the Madison County Tournament 5-0 against the other Madison County teams. They won not only first place at the Madison County Tournament but also won first place 9-0 against the other Madison County teams in the Regular Season. This is the fourth time in a row that Monrovia has won the Madison County Regular Season. In addition, we had 4 players to make the All - County team: Isabelle Berube, Hunter Mason, Cade Collins, and Tate Osborne. Congratulations to all of our scholars' bowl players who participated in the Regular Season and the County Tournament.


The scores are as follows for our matches at the County Tournament:

Round 1 Monrovia vs. Meridianville 495 – 100
Round 2 Monrovia vs. Central 395 – 120
Round 3 Monrovia vs. Buckhorn 345 – 205
Round 4 Monrovia vs. Madison County 350 – 65
Round 5 Monrovia vs. Sparkman 505 - 100


Wish them well as they head next weekend to the Thompson Middle School tournament in Alabaster, Alabama in the Questions Unlimited National Qualifier.

Holiday Fun

On Dec. 13, the MMS Student Library Committee celebrated a semester of hard work at their Christmas Party. These 31 students have been chosen to serve as Library helpers during the year. They check in books, shelve books, assist with Library events (like Grandparents Day) and help with Library fundraisers (like Book Fair and cupcake sales). They do a great job and definitely deserved to party!

The week of Dec. 10-14 was full of Holiday Cheer as our students participated in Dress Up Days. They dressed up like candy canes, snowmen, festive gear, ugly sweaters and wore comfy pajamas.

The traditional Book Tree and Book Fireplace have sprung up, but we’ve had a new addition to the holiday festivities in the Library: Dobby the Elf on the (book)Shelf! Our MMS students have had a great time searching for Dobby’s hiding place every day!

National Board Certification

Sparkman English Teacher, Ashley Fitch was recently named a Nationally Board Certified Teacher! This is a huge accomplishment and we are very proud of her!

HudsonAlpha Tour and Lab

Mrs. Kimbrell’s AP Biology and CP chemistry classes toured HudsonAlpha as well as complete a lab where students were able to detect genetically modified foods. Students were able to use science technologies such as micro-pipettes, centrifuges, PCRs, and gel electrophoresis.

State Educator of the Year Award

Congratulations to Cindy Stanley, SHS World of Work teacher, who was presented the State Educator of the Year award from the Governor’s Committee on Advancing Employment of People with Disabilities. Governor Ivey presented her the award.

Sparkman Engineering

Congratulations to the Sparkman Engineering teams for winning first place in the InSPIRESS competition.They competed by presenting their payload concept design to engineers, scientist and researchers from NASA, Redstone Arsenal, and UAH. Each team competed in three categories payload proposal, open house and final review. There were three divisions and they did outstanding!

Bryant-Jordan Award Winners

Congratulations to Emerson Barrett and Jaylon Dixon, recipients of Buckhorn High School's Bryant-Jordan Awards. Emerson was selected as our Scholar-Athlete representative and Jaylon Dixon was chosen as our Student Achievement representative. The Bryant-Jordan program was founded in 1986 as a partnership between the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and the Alabama High School Athletic Association with the mission of recognizing the state's best and brightest high school student-athletes. The 2019 scholarship banquet, set for Monday, April 8, marks the 34th year of the scholarship program.

Congratulations to Emerson Barrett for being chosen for Buckhorn High School's DAR Good Citizen Award. Emerson recently attended a ceremony where area recipients were honored. Buckhorn High School is one of four Madison County Schools, and the only high school, to be a two-time recipient of the Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Lighthouse award. Schools are identified and selected for this award based on achievement of excellent performance in all nine major categories of the Blueprint for Excellence assessment. Varsity Girls got the WIN over Grissom, 38-33 and our undefeated Varsity Boys (10-0) followed up with another WIN over Grissom, 74-68. JV Girls won 55-13, JV boys won 48-36 and Freshman Boys completed the sweep with a 54-34 win!!

BHS SOCCER RECEIVES TARGET GRANT


Congratulations to BHS Soccer for being selected for a $1000 Target grant. The Target youth soccer grants program provides support for player registration fees, player and field equipment, and training and professional development for volunteer coaches. As part of the program, Target will provide annual $1,000 grants on behalf of each Target store and distribution center in the U.S. to federally tax-exempt section 501(c)(3) charitable organizations, accredited schools, or public agencies located in the U.S. or one of its protectorates that have soccer programs serving youth 5 to 18 years old.

Blue Ribbon Conference

Two of our outstanding teacher leaders attended and presented at the National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Conference this week in Orlando, FL. Mrs. Smith received comments from colleagues from conference attendees telling her what an awesome, outstanding job Mrs. Faith and Mrs. Borgert did. We are so proud of them!

International Harvest Lunch

NMS 5th Grade visited the Madison County Co-Op for their annual International Harvest Lunch. They learned about farming and agriculture in Iran, Nigeria, Russia, Philippines, and the United States. They also enjoyed food from each of those countries.

Gearing Up with Girls

Several 4th and 5th grade NMS students participated Gearing Up with Girls, an Engineering Workshop at James Clemens High School. They completed engineering challenges throughout the day including a catapult design and egg drop challenge. Gearing Up with Girls was organized by a Senior level Girl Scout as a part of her Gold Award project. The Gold Award is the highest achievement within the Girl Scouts of the USA.

National Board Certification

Amber Moore, the 5th grade Math and Science teacher, received her National Board Certification as a Middle Child Generalist on December 1, 2018. We are proud of her hard work and dedication to teaching at New Market School. Dr. Melissa Shields, NBCT, brought Mrs. Moore a temporary certificate and as you can tell, she was very excited.

On December 4, the NMS and WGS 3rd and 4th Grade ACE students visited Cathedral Caverns. The students had a great time and learned so much.

Indian Ed Robotics Field Trip

The 6th grade NMS Indian Ed students joined Central and Walnut Grove for an exciting day of robotics programming. They spent the day completing challenges, troubleshooting programs, and sending code!

PreK Family Night

The NMS PreK students and their parents participated in a holiday themed family event on Dec. 4. The students crafted with the parents, wrote letters to Santa (with help!), and celebrated Christmas throughout the evening.

Hour of Code

NMS students participated in Code.org’s Hour of Code this week with fun Christmas challenges, dance party algorithms, and more! “The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science.”

3rd Graders from Mrs. Humphries class got to try coding today in the computer lab on the Google Santa Tracker!!! They really enjoyed this intro lesson!

Canned Food Drive

New Market students collected canned goods for the Bobbie G. Odom food pantry the last week of December. The students collected 2000 items!!! We are so proud of our students and families for giving to this great cause! Our student ambassadors helped to sort and deliver these items to the food pantry!

Congratulations to our Employee of the Month, Mrs. Roxy Rose! Mrs. Rose was voted on by her peers and colleagues for this recognition!


Mrs. Rose does a LOT for our school. She is currently a member of the Green Team, which is a team that is currently planning to build an observatory overlooking the Flint River in our backyard. Mrs. Rose also voluntarily led a Phonics book study last summer and did a phenomenal job sharing her knowledge and best practices. Moreover, Mrs. Rose volunteers for the Walking Club each week.

Students Encourage Peers to Make Good Decisions

The HGHS S.T.A.N.D. UP (Students Taking a New Direction Under Pressure) Team performed skits for freshman classes and spoke from the heart about their own experiences in high school. Their purpose--to encourage our younger students to make good decisions and do the right thing. It was obvious how much our seniors care about their peers. While the team does have a teacher sponsor, it is a student-led organization. We appreciate these students' hard work in preparing for today but mostly, their character and willingness to help others. Thanks to all members of the S.T.A.N.D. UP Team!

Girls' Bowling Secures Regional Appearance


With a 1014-846 win over Buckhorn, the girls' bowling team moves to 7-0 in area play and has secured a spot at Regionals! Congratulations, Lady Trojans! The boys' team lost a tough one to Buckhorn, marking their first loss of the season and moving to 6-1 in area play. Calvin Ninh set an HGHS bowling record of 253 in a match against Randolph this season. We are so proud of these teams!

A "GLENNgineered" Christmas Tree

We are loving the Engineering Academy's Christmas tree! Students designed ornaments using the CAD program and 3D printer, used chemical reactions to crystallize the pipe cleaner ornaments, and added parts from Vex robotics to "GLENNgineer" the tree (new word courtesy of Mrs. Glenn). It looks great!!

HGHS Student Excels in Equestrian Sport


Hallie Rush, a sophomore at HGHS, recently won the following: 1.35 (fences 4.4 feet tall) Zone Finals (states consisted of TN, MS, AL, GA, FL, and SC ) Champion on her horse Emiel and Reserve Champion on her horse HRS Fortuna, 1.25 (fences 4.1 feet tall) Zone Finals Reserve Champion, USEF National Champion on her horse Sky Miles, and competing in the Interscholastic Equestrian Association for horses, she won her over fences and her flat classes, qualifying for Regionals. She is also a national athletic letterman for the United States Equestrian Federation. Congratulations to Hallie on these outstanding accomplishments!

LFES Students Exhibit Servant Leadership

Ch 48 Food Drive- Second grade students, Avery Minskey and Kiptyn Patterson, came up with the idea to start a club named the Kaboom Club and collect food for families before Christmas. They went around the school and asked teachers to bring in canned foods. They collected about 400 cans in a very short amount of time. Allen Stroud from Channel 48 even came to our school to interview and film Avery and Kiptyn! We are so proud of the love and care they have shown for our community!

Visit from Meteorologist, Brandon Spinner

Third graders were excited to welcome Brandon Spinner, Channel 48 Meteorologist, to our school! The idea came from one student’s assignment that was turned in. Mr. Spinner talked to students about weather and let them help with a couple of weather-related experiments. As a thank you for coming to visit, he was given a special pair of LFES socks since he loves fun socks!

Girls on the Run

MMIS Girls on the Run group finished out their season this month. Even though weather canceled the 5K, the girls enjoyed receiving their medals.

FCA Huddle

Hazel Green High School senior came and spoke to our FCA Huddle this month. We enjoyed having her and some of the other huddle leaders from the high school along with some interns from FCA.

Perfect Attendance

Students with perfect attendance for the second half of the nine weeks enjoyed an ice cream treat during their Encore times this month.

Food Drive

MMIS students brought in over 200 items for the House of the Harvest

during the December Food Drive.

Math Escape Room

4th grade Math students worked through a Christmas themed Escape Room activity reviewing their essential standard of Division.

Ambassadors of Friendship

Student Ambassadors visited a local nursing home and brought board games to play with the residents. These games are part of the Alabama 200 grant.

Mrs. McMillin, our Reading Interventionist, received her National Board Certification this month! We are so proud of her and all that she does for our students at The Mill.

Kindergarten is celebrating Christmas around the world and studying all the different

traditions in different countries.

The Nutcracker

Third grade had a great field trip to the Nutcracker and Chuck E Cheese.

Christmas Escape Game

Mrs. Boyett’s Fifth grade is making sure Christmas isn’t ruined by doing

an escape game with all kinds of different math problems in it.

Holiday Cards

During Art this week, the students created holiday cards.

These students worked hard and really put a good bit of detail into their cards.

Pre-K had a great day at Grinch Day!

The kids loved describing the grinch and having a tasty treat!

Thanksgiving Bracelets

Mrs. Reid’s Third Grade made area and perimeter robots and bracelets

for the real Thanksgiving story.

Mrs. Young’s Fifth Grade tested the ph of a mystery substance.

Novel Study

They have also been reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Mrs. Reese transformed her room to make the novel study that much more enjoyable! We love seeing these students so engaged.

Happy Birthday, Alabama

December 14, 2018 we celebrated the 199th year of Alabama’s statehood. In Mrs. Brown’s 6th grade history class the challenge for the day was to break into the locked box to rescue the party favors before Mr. Party Pooper came into the classroom. She is happy to report all but one of her classes achieved that goal. Happy birthday Alabama!

December 14th brought a special guest to our school. Alabama’s Lt. Governor, Mr. Will Ainsworth. He spoke to the fourth grade classes about Alabama and answered their questions about his job and how Alabama’s government worked.

WW1 Re-enactment

The war has begun! Student creativity was shining through when sixth grade students created re-enactments of five World War I scenes to wrap up a unit of study in Mrs. Turner’s class. Every group had to research and write their own scripts. #MCESfamily #ALLmeansALLMCSS

Tiger Pride Drawing

For the Tiger Pride drawing for this week three names were drawn and those students received two tickets to Marvel Universe Live this weekend at the Vaun Braun Civic Center.
