Alumni Spotlight - Annamarie Strehlow, Class of 2009
Just call her Ironwoman.
2009 Homestead graduate Annamarie Strehlow has always been athletic, with experience playing high school and collegiate soccer, then turning into a runner after college. But as a three-time Ironman competition participant, Strehlow's athletic prowess is truly impressive. In October 2022, Strehlow completed the Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
Current Homestead senior, Abigail Maxey, caught up with Strehlow last October to discuss her accomplishments and talk about the physical and mental preparations necessary to take on such a grueling competition. You can read Maxey's article, "Defeating the Iron Giant," published in the Highlander Online student publication, below.
Julius Wilkerson, HHS '18, Campbell Trophy Finalist
Homestead High School is proud to announce that Julius Wilkerson, class of 2018, was named as a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy. The Campbell Trophy is college football's premier scholar-athlete award that annually recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance, and exemplary leadership. The 15 finalists will each receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2022 National Football Foundation (NFF) National Scholar-Athlete Class Presented by Fidelity Investments.
Submitted by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates for the Campbell Trophy must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of playing eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. Wilkerson is currently a senior and linebacker at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan and has served as captain of his football team for three years. Wilkerson boasts a 3.85 GPA and is majoring in psychology.
“Julius embodies what the Campbell Award is all about. His dedication and hard work were evident on a daily basis in the classroom, in the halls and on the football field,” said Matt Wolf, MTSD Academic & Career Planning Coordinator and Homestead defensive coordinator. “He is one of the top humans to have walked our halls at Homestead. Julius put in the work and embraced every opportunity to get better in the classroom, in the weight room, and on the football field - all with a massive grin and a kind word for his fellow Highlanders.”
Wilkerson has also volunteered with the Salvation Army, 2nd & 7 reading program, Be the Match bone marrow registration drives, and hospital visits. A Fellowship of Christian Athletes leader since 2019, he was also a member of the Wayne State Student Leadership Council, and has served as a football small group leader for three years.
