Another Reason to Add the Parent Square App
On February 21, we dismissed students early because of the snow. We rarely have to make this decision. Sending students home in the middle of the day is also a complex endeavor. One of the critical components for keeping students safe is the fast notification to families. During that February 21 event, we used ParentSquare to communicate with all of you. This tool gave us the ability to almost instantly and efficiently communicate with thousands of staff, parents, and students, ensuring these people knew our plans as soon as possible. This communication enabled families to make the necessary adjustments. It was invaluable. If you haven’t downloaded the app, you should! Using the app makes communication with all of you efficient and fast especially if you have students in multiple schools.

Upcoming Safety Drill
Next week we will practice our "Secure" drill. This protocol is used when there is something outside of the school building (coyote, loose livestock, etc.) that requires students to remain indoors. During the drill, students attend classes, have passing time, eat lunch, etc. It is business as usual, only with everyone remaining inside. Teachers will be reviewing the procedures with students prior to our practice at the end of the week.
For more information about school safety drills please see the attached document about Standard Response Protocols.
Lost & Found Being Donated Soon
Please remind your student to check the Lost and Found (in the cafeteria) for lost items. Parents may sign in at the front office and check the lost and found out too. Items will be donated during Spring Break. We do not have enough room to keep it.
Congratulations!!
Congratulations to Zach Bennett for getting a Superior (I) score on his trombone solo this past weekend at Solo and Ensemble. Great Job!
Spring Into Learning Event! Multi-District Early Learning Event!
Do have a student who will be a kindergartner in the fall? Do you know someone else who does? Please see the attached flyer to learn about Early Learning in the Gresham-Barlow School District.
Middle School Chromebooks
The beginning of each trimester is a great time to check on the status of student supplies and their chromebooks. Each student was issued a chromebook, charger and a case. Students are responsible for keeping the chromebook in good working order. The replacement cost for damaged or lost items is currently $300. Please check in with your student about theirs.
8th Grade Information for AVID
Dear Parents of 8th Graders:
Remember to mark your calendars! Sam Barlow High School is hosting a Family Night for 8th graders on Tuesday, April 4th (5:30-8:15). This is a great opportunity to tour Sam Barlow's newly renovated building and get a feel for what high school will be like in the Fall.
On Monday, AVID Teacher, Amanda McLeod from Sam Barlow High School came to 8th grade classrooms to present on the AVID program. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), is a four-year elective class which helps prepare students in the academic middle for college and/or trade schools. These are students who are capable of completing a college-prep curriculum but may be falling short of their potential, and who need extra assistance. The core component is the AVID elective, which supports students as they tackle the most rigorous classes. AVID's teaching strategies, curriculum and trainings are used not only in the AVID class but by subject-area teachers school-wide. Students must be motivated to be a part of AVID and willing to work hard. Students who are interested in AVID must submit their AVID applications to Whitney Roush by March 15th.
