WWI Project World Civilizations
Ms. Gardner's World Civilizations class recently finished studying World War I. Students did two projects that really helped them understand what life was like in trenches for soldiers. First, they journaled from the perspective of a soldier during a simulation of trench warfare. Students arranged their desks into opposing sides and hid behind them while Ms. Gardner played war sounds and Mr. Wilson came in firing rounds from his Nerf Blaster.
Next, they researched pictures of WWI trenches to understand each part of a trench and what it was used for. Students then used what they had learned about trench warfare and worked in groups to design and build a trench in a shoebox using supplies provided by Ms. Gardner. Students really showed their creativity in the variety of designs they came up with!
Principal's Message - GWHS Orientation
We know that moving schools can be challenging. That's why at GWHS we have created an orientation process to make the transition as smooth as possible. During this orientation we make sure all of our students know what to do, where to go, and how to be successful in our school. We also love connecting with the guardians and believe that students succeed when the school, guardian, and students all work together, which is why we create plans on getting to school, having regular attendance, and a pathway to graduation. We believe that meeting face to face with every new family coming to our school is part of what sets us apart and helps our Eagles soar!
Student of the Month - Xavier Ruiz
Xavier started at GWHS at the beginning of this school year as a junior with the determination to work hard and be successful here. Part way through the school year he and his family were sadly faced with the tragedy of losing his grandma. When he returned to school he told his Advisor that he was still just as determined to pass all of his classes because he had made a promise to his grandma that he would graduate high school, and he wanted to make her proud. So far, he has kept that promise. He is an excellent student, but more importantly he is a wonderful person who is kind, generous, and cares for those around him. He has passed all 6 classes each term, earned 6.75 credits and a school year GPA of 3.1 and he continues to work hard.
Xavier is really proud of his tight-knit friend group. In fact, he said with a big smile that he has never had a friend group like this. They are open with and supportive of each other and share in each others' successes and struggles. One friend said of Xavier, “He’s so wise and strong and has helped me in so many ways.”
Xavier wants to continue to work toward graduation and hopes to get a job over the summer. He’s interested in welding as a job after high school because it pays well and will allow him the chance to figure out how to “have the best life ever.”
Teacher in Excellence Award - Danielle Turnage
Each month Ogden City School District recognizes new teachers with the Teacher in Excellence Award. This month, that teacher was our own Danielle Turnage. Danielle has been with GW helping our students in multiple roles, and this year entered the classroom as our Environmental Science teacher. She has worked with our Instructional Coach to grow in her teaching skills including classroom management, lesson planning and student engagement. We are so proud of her and grateful to have her teaching and impacting our students in a positive way.
