STUDENT OF THE MONTH- Scholarship
Congratulations to our Scholastic Art & Writing Awards winners!
For 100 years, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have offered creative teens a safe space to freely express themselves through drawings, poetry, paintings, sculptures, fashion design, photographs, short stories, essays, and so much more! By judging work using the core tenets of originality, skill, and personal vision and voice, the Awards have always been a place where freedom of expression is valued and recognized. Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have recognized some of America’s most celebrated artists and writers while they were teenagers, including: Tschabala Self, John Lithgow, Ken Burns, Truman Capote, Sylvia Plath, Robert Redford, Stephen King, Kay WalkingStick, Charles White, Joyce Carol Oates, Amanda Gorman, Richard Avedon, and Andy Warhol!
This year was an amazing year for RMHS students. We had NINE winners, including five gold keys. A gold key is the highest award one can receive regionally. All gold key images have already moved on to New York City for national adjudication.
Let’s congratulate all of our winners! They have been recognized by creative professionals as having the most outstanding work from the over 10,000 pieces of art and writing submitted by Massachusetts students.

This is a Test
by Stephen Gregg
Directed by Will O'Connor (RMHS student)
As the ticking clock reminds you, only 60 minutes remain to complete this oh-so-important predictor of your future. But you didn't get the review sheets, the teacher doesn't like you and your classmates are blatantly cheating. Time passes and the voices in your head remind you that though you are having trouble with the test, your personal life is far, far worse. Then you reach the essay question. The good news—it's an opinion essay. The bad news—it's in Chinese. And things aren't going to get better!
The Actor's Nightmare
By Christopher Durang
Directed by Leigh Barrett (guest director)
--
Having casually wandered onstage, George is informed that one of the actors, Eddie, has been in an auto accident and he must replace him immediately. Apparently no one is sure of what play is being performed but George (costumed as Hamlet) seems to find himself in the middle of a scene from Private Lives, surrounded by such luminaries as Sarah Siddons, Dame Ellen Terry and Henry Irving. As he fumbles through one missed cue after another the other actors shift to Hamlet, then a play by Samuel Beckett, and then a climactic scene from what might well be A Man for All Seasons—by which time the disconcerted George has lost all sense of contact with his fellow performers. Yet, in the closing moments of the play, he rises to the occasion and finally says the right lines, whereupon make-believe suddenly gives way to reality as the executioner’s axe (meant for Sir Thomas Moore) instead sends poor George to oblivion—denying him a well-earned curtain call.

UNIFIED BASKETBALL
We are so excited to share that this spring will be the inaugural season of the RMHS Unified Basketball Team!! Unified sports allows students with and without disabilities to compete together, develop connections and breakdown stereotypes by building friendships.
The team will be competing against other schools in the Middlesex League and will start the week of April 3rd and run through May 24th. The team has a 5 game season that will conclude with a jamboree on May 24th at Wakefield Memorial High School where RMHS will compete against the other teams in the league. (We will not meet the week of April vacation.)
After the opening week of two practices, we will hold one practice and one game per week with practices being 1 hour long. Practices will likely be held at Coolidge Middle School, and home games will be held at RMHS.
If you are interested in playing on the team or have any questions, please reach out to Coach, Tara Herlihy, Coolidge Special Education teacher, at Tara.Herlihy@reading.k12.ma.us or Tom Zaya, RMHS Athletic Director at Thomas.Zaya@reading.k12.ma.us
We will be holding a Zoom meeting for interested students and parents of students interested in playing on the team in the coming weeks. We’re looking forward to a fun season!
