Attendance
- Excused and unexcused absences add up to too much time lost in the classroom.
- Students are at risk academically if they miss 10 percent of the school year, or about 18 days. Once too many absences have occurred, they can affect learning, regardless of whether the absences are excused or unexcused.
- Sporadic, not just consecutive, absences matter. Before you know it - just one or two days a month can add up to nearly 10 percent of the school year.
- Avoid unnecessary absences. Some absences are unavoidable. Occasionally, children get sick and need to stay home. What is important is getting children to school as often as possible.

Clubs/ Athletics
More than Just an Extra-Curricular Activity
Research shows that participating in after-school activities has significant positive impacts on the physical, social, and mental well-being of young people. These programs are often linked to better behavior, higher self-esteem, reduced risk taking, and more engagement and activism both in and out of the school environment.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 63 percent of households have both parents active in the workforce. An unintended consequence of this is that increasingly more children are home alone after school with only an electronic device and social media to guide them. The American Pediatric Association recently warned that overexposure to devices has negative impacts on behavior, mood, attention, motivation, sleep patterns, and especially on social learning.
The right program matters. Parents and students need to spend time discussing the opportunities and options when it comes to after-school activities, and they need to keep in mind that joining a team or club may be a learning curve when finding the right fit. The most important thing is to keep lines of communication clear, and follow up with how any activity is going. Grand Blanc High School prides itself on the variety and number of opportunities provided to our student body to get them involved. EDP
In the upcoming weeks, your student will be reviewing and updating their Educational Development Plan (EDP) as part of their English or Social Studies classes. EDPs are electronic portfolios students create in 8thgrade to help them identify career goals and a plan of action to reach those goals. Please ask your student to walk through their EDP with you. Review their goals and career plans and have discussions about how school choices now will affect career options later in life. You will receive information soon that outlines how to access your student’s EDP and instructions on how to explore the different career planning tools to help your student reach their career goals.

ASVAB
The Career Resource Center is offering the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), which is a career research program. The Armed Services use this program as a military entrance program to determine qualification. In addition, this program offers GREAT insight for students to help explore the world of work and gain confidence in making the best career decisions for themselves, outside of the military. This test is given at no cost to students. Once the test is complete, a certified specialist comes back to Grand Blanc to provide an in-depth seminar to explain results to the students.
Session #1: Thursday, October 31st
Session #2: Thursday, November 7th
Test Time: 7:20am
Test Location: 603
*Please note this assessment is given in TWO sessions. You must be present for both sessions.
