What's Happening...
February is right around the corner and during this time of year we see an increase in student illness. Please see the message below from the health office in regard to symptoms and prevention. Members of the Robotics team are attending the Botball Workshop today and tomorrow for their upcoming competition. They were given an overview of the challenge and specifications for their robots. School counselors recently met with members of the junior class providing an information on college planning and resume building.
Our winter sports teams continue to have success. Multiple teams have qualified for post season play including girls basketball and boys basketball. Senior Parents/Guardians:
Make sure to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application if you have not already done so. This application can be found at fafsa.gov. The FAFSA is the most important application in the financial aid process. All colleges and universities will require the FAFSA before determining a financial aid award. Colleges may also require students to complete a CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE (profileonline.collegeboard.org) and/or a college specific financial aid application. It is important to be aware of each college's financial aid deadlines - missing deadlines could result in missing out on financial aid. For more information on the financial aid process please visit mefa.org.
Middlesex Community College will host FAFSA Day, a free community workshop to help students and families fill out the 2020-2021 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the federally required application for financial aid.
FAFSA Day at Middlesex offers different options for families seeking assistance, including computer support, to complete the FAFSA online, as well as one-on-one assistance from financial aid experts. To register please go to FAFSADay.org.
Notes from Debbie Donohoe in the THS Health Office
ILLNESS: We have been seeing an increase in student illness since school resumed after winter break. Students are presenting with stomach viruses characterized by vomiting and/or diarrhea, a lot of students with cold, cough and sore throat, and have started receiving parent reports of medically confirmed strep throat and flu. As per school policy, if your child has been sick, (vomiting, diarrhea, fever over 100, communicable illness such as influenza, strep throat, conjunctivitis, etc.) they must stay home from school.
Students must be fever free without the use of medication containing acetaminophen or ibuprofen, no vomiting, and no diarrhea for 24 hours before they are clear to return to school.
For illnesses requiring antibiotics such as strep throat, students need to be on antibiotic therapy AND fever free for at least 24 hours before returning to school.
For common viruses such as coughs and colds it is not usually appropriate to keep children out of school for the duration of symptoms, however the student’s cough should be manageable and your child should be eating and drinking adequately.
We would appreciate being notified if your child has been to the doctor’s office and confirmed with any communicable illness. It is our priority to keep all students safe and healthy to maximize every child’s time in the classroom.
Frequent hand washing at home and in school is a must to limit illness transmission! Please adhere to the school illness policy if your child is sick.
Refillable water bottles are strongly encouraged to keep children hydrated through out the day. In addition to keeping children properly hydrated, water helps to soothe sore throats and quiets coughs. Please send your child to school with a refillable water bottle daily to keep on their desks.
DOCUMENTATION OF PHYSICAL EXAMINATION AND IMMUNIZATION HISTORY:
Please continue to send in documentation of your child’s physical examinations and immunization history as you receive them. Starting next year (2020-2021 school year) at least one booster dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY), received on or after 16 years of age, will be required prior to entering 11th grade or your child may be excluded until it is received.
MEDICATION POLICY:
A written medication order from a physician is required to administer both prescription AND over the counter medication in the school setting (this includes cough drops). The nurse can administer short-term (10 days or less) prescription medications such as antibiotics without a written physicians order as long as the original labeled prescription container is provided and written parental consent is obtained.
