Note from the Principal

January 2019

Please welcome our new Behavioral Specialist, Ms. Sharon VanDyke!

I'm pleased to announce that we have hired Ms. Sharon VanDyke as our new behavioral specialist. Ms. VanDyke has worked for Kalamazoo Public Schools for the past sixteen years as a Behavioral Specialist and Attendance Interventionist. She earned her degree from Western Michigan University and lives in the Kalamazoo area with her two children. Her passion is working with students to help them achieve their potential both in and outside the classroom. She is excited for the opportunity to be a part of the Arbor Team and to meet and assist our students, staff, and families.

Colder Weather and School Closings

As our Michigan weather gets colder please see that your children have appropriate outerwear for recess and any other outside activities. We ask that you send your child to school with appropriate head, hand, and foot wear along with snow pants (when the temp reaches 30 degrees). We will take our students out for recess unless the temperature is at 10 degrees Fahrenheit or if we have a wind chill factor of 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The other factor would be the amount of snowfall at the time of recess. Students may not stay in from outdoor recess unless we have a doctor’s note on file stating that they cannot go outdoors.

As winter weather approaches, I would like to review some of Arbor’s practices and procedures in the handbook regarding school closings. Specifically, we ask that you watch WWMT (Channel 3) or WOOD (Channel 8). We will make every effort to announce the closing by 6:30 am. Also follow us on Facebook and/or sign-up for Remind to receive school closings and news information.

Save the Date for our Winter Dance

Our Winter Dance will be held on February 8th from 5-7pm at the Riverside Country Club. We will be celebrating our 20th year anniversary as well. More information will come home soon.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

There will be no school on Monday, January 21st, 2019 in remembrance of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Tis the Season for Sickness

This time of year, unfortunately, is when we start to see illnesses creep up and spread around school. Please know that we actively send students home that are sick, and will notify you if someone in your child’s class was diagnosed with a contagious illness/condition. We, as always, teach the students the importance of good hand washing, and also encourage the use of sanitizer. Please keep your child home if they have a fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. We want to keep our students healthy!

Big picture

Safety Reminder!!!

We would appreciate it if students did not arrive at school in the morning until 8:00 am. We have supervision available at that time. Students are not to be dropped off at the center island between schools. There is absolutely no parking in the fire lane even if it’s only for a brief period. Parents may park in the parking lot or available spaces in the middle island and walk their child to class. For parents dropping off at the K-3 building, please remember to turn left before the CDC drive, and then exit or proceed to the 3-6 building. Small children are present under the CDC canopy quite frequently, and drive thru traffic for school drop off is prohibited. A reminder to parents to please not leave your car unattended in the circle drive between 8:00 – 8:30 am and between 3:00 – 3:35 pm. This allows us to provide a free flow of traffic and to safely unload/load the students into your car.

ARBOR ACADEMY IS A SMOKE AND DRUG FREE ZONE! No smoking on school grounds/property. Thank you for your cooperation.
