8th Grade Language Arts at Hoboken HS
This week the 8th graders continued to delve into the world of Maycomb, Alabama through the eyes of Scout Finch. We focused on setting and character development through sign-posts along with comprehension and discussion questions. We began to discuss empathy and what it means in relation to TKAM as we analyzed Atticus’ famous quote. Additionally, the students are working on their research papers; outlining and introductions were the focus this week. Finally, classroom spelling bees were held today to determine who will represent the 8th grade in the school spelling bee next week. Great job, everyone!
GSA at Hoboken MS
This week, the GSA read the short comic, "The Golem and the Mapmaker" by Molly Knox Ostertag. This is another short story from This is Our Rainbow. After reading, club members discussed the theme of the story, “Make your own map.” We discussed the importance of being ourselves and finding our own paths in life. After the reading, students created their own life “maps” that included dreams, ambitions, goals, and purposes.
7th Grade Language Arts at Hoboken MS
This week, seventh graders continued their core novel study of The Outsiders by engaging in a Mock Trial. Students were assigned to the Prosecution or the Defense for the murder of Bob the Soc. The Prosecution used evidence from the text to prove that Johnny Cade intentionally murdered Bob, and the Defense used evidence to prove that the act was self-defense, and therefore, not murder. The opening statements, witness testimonies, and closing statements were compelling! In Writing Workshop, students began drafting the body paragraphs of their Photo Essays. We look forward to completing our first drafts next week!
Literary Magazine at Hoboken HS
The Literary Magazine Club is excited to share the Fall/Winter Edition of the magazine, which features photography, artwork, poetry, and short stories submitted by Hoboken High School students. English Language Arts at Hoboken HS
This week, the students in grades 9-11 took the mid-year LinkIt assessment during their English classes. The LinkIt is administered during September, January, and May; the data is shared with the students to let them see their growth in English Language Arts skills throughout the school year. The assessment tests them on their knowledge of vocabulary, their reading comprehension, and their ability to identify textual evidence to support their responses. They have been reading historical documents - The Gettysburg Address and the Declaration of Independence, for example - to prepare for the rigor of the LinkIt assessment.
Ms. Wilson's Pre AP Geometry at Hoboken HS
This week, Pre-AP geometry students have been working on their knowledge of transformations. We began by defining the three different types of symmetry and then grew their understanding of the three rigid motions (rotations, translations, and reflections) from there. Students used Geometry Desmos to explore each one before making posters showcasing the transformations and explaining how to find corresponding points. All of these ideas will be used moving forward to develop their understanding of congruent figures.
Pedro Gonzalez Chosen for the Ramapo College New Jersey School Film Festival
Congratulations to Pedro Gonzalez on the success of his film Dreams of a Refugee being chosen for this year’s Ramapo College New Jersey School Film Festival. This year’s festival will be held on Saturday, January 28th in the Sharp Theater in the Berrie Center at Ramapo College of New Jersey.
There is no cost for entry, everyone is welcome, and it’s a great chance for family, friends, cast, and crew to see Pedro’s film on the big screen. After the screening, Ramapo will be awarding prizes for Best Editing, Best Writing, Best Cinematography, Best Documentary, Best Fiction Film, Best Acting, and Best of the Fest, which are all chosen by a jury of faculty and Ramapo Digital Filmmaking students. All award recipients will receive a student “Oscar” trophy, as well as category-specific prizes.
In Mr. MacAulay's class, students have been working on original social justice film projects. They wrote a paradigm to a screenplay or dub sheet and then shot and edited their film. Pedro wanted to tell the story of a person who wants to come to our country to earn a better living. He explained that in post-production he refined the story by adding stock footage to create a stronger narrative.
We are so proud of your talents Pedro; best of luck at the festival.

Science: This week in 5th grade science students observed and analyzed the patterns of both our sun and moon within our sky. As a class, we concluded that the reason why the sun appears to be moving across our sky was actually because of our rotation here on Earth. Students then were able to practice their skill by working in small groups to complete the lesson activities associated with the content.

Early Childhood Education Highlights
Preschool at St. Francis
In Room 406 at Mile Square Early Learning Center, located at the St Francis site, students celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day! They started by reading the book called “Martin Luther King Jr. Day” by Ronin Nelson. As a class they learned the meaning of the word “unfairly”. Students also discussed the words acceptance, peace, and caring.
To further explore the idea of diversity and cultural differences, the students did a visual hands-on activity called “Eggs Diversity”. They observed two eggs, a brown egg and a white egg. The students compared the outsides of the eggs and predicted what the inside of the two eggs would look like. Some questions that were asked were: Do the eggs look the same? Do you think the brown egg is brown on the inside? Do you think the white egg is white on the inside?
To continue the activity, the eggs were cracked and the students discussed the findings. Some questions that were asked were: Are they different on the inside? If we removed the eggshells, can you tell which yolk came from the white egg and which yolk came from the brown eggs?
As a class, the students expressed that all people should be treated the same no matter what they look like on the outside or where they come from because on the inside, just like the eggs they observed, we all look the same!
Preschool at Calabro School
During Play Planning students in Room 303 are scaffolded and challenged according to their zone of proximal development as they develop core academic skills. Students develop emergent literacy skills and phonemic awareness using the Tools Sound Map to find sounds and letters to represent words in message while they plan out their activity for their centers.
Preschool at Brandt School
In Brandt Room 104. Ms. Lisa's and Ms. Natalie's class started the new theme of Veterinarian. The students learned that a veterinarian is a type of doctor that takes care of many types animals. The class made the Science Center into the veterinarians' office where the doctors, nurses & technicians can help and take care of the animals. The Literacy Area is the waiting room in which you wait your turn to be called in for your appointment. The Art Area is a pet store that specializes in bakery treats and fashionable dog carriers. In the Table Toys Center, you can adopt an animal that needs a home. The class even transformed the Block Area into a zoo!
Preschool at 770
After listening to the story “Mix It Up” by Hervé Tullet , students in Jackson 108 were inspired to mix it up in the classroom! First, they predicted what they thought would happen when two different water colors were mixed. After testing out the predictions, the students were curious to see what would happen if ALL the food dye colors together were mixed. Would it be yellow? Would it be red? How could we make these colors become darker or lighter? The possibilities were endless! The students were able to pick two paint colors to mix together themselves. Of course the students had to add a few more colors in before the day was done
. Don’t be afraid to mix up your day!
Wallace Preschool Wildcats
There have been a lot of great things going on in Room 110. One of our students was selected as Wallace School Student of the Month. Congratulations!! The students are working on generalizing math skills when applying them to games.
They participated in activities that celebrated Martin Luther King Jr Day. Students worked together in tracing their hands to create a Dream Wreath with their fingers interlocking to show unity and a cultural diversity project.
