Vietnam

BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER THE WAR

BEFORE THE WAR

Life before Vietnam, for the Vietnamese, was complicated. They were controlled by France. While in war over the Vietnamese, they lost. Vietnam was split into the North Communist and South Non-Communist due to the Geneva Conference. Culture was separated. Normal life was separated.

For Americans, life was simple. America was coming off of the Cold War. The U.S was busy trying to not let communism spread throughout the globe. Meanwhile, Vietnam decided to split and go half Communist.

During the war

The Vietnam war was a very costly war. More than 3 million were killed. The war was a bloody, difficult war to win.

"According to a survey by the Veterans Administration, some 500,000 of the 3 million troops who served in Vietnam suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, and rates of divorce, suicide, alcoholism and drug addiction were markedly higher among veterans."

The war was very difficult for soldiers family's. Because it was mentally straining, soldiers turned to dangerous things. Many drank, cut, and proceed with many harming things. Many cheated on their wives and became depressed. The Vietnam was a huge mental and emotional war. If they wanted to win, they had to win mentally.

Vietnam war also had lots of new weapons. There were many tanks, vehicles, guns, bombs, and artillery involved.

After the war

Most people think that North Vietnam won the war because they reached their goals and received independence. Countries who fought were in great debt. Countries spent so much money on trying to insure the war was won by them. In America, people lost faith in government and the political system. Vietnam was still divided and crushed by that division. Also in American, soldiers were "shunned" when they came back. Nothing was done to insure they would bounce back.
