A Message from Principal Skyles
Hello McDaniel,
We have a few reminders going into next week. Monday is a school holiday for Presidents’ Day. The PPS Successful Schools Survey is now open for your feedback--please complete it to let us know how we're doing (links in multiple languages below). If your student has not completed forecasting for next year’s classes, please sit down with your student this weekend and complete the google form for their grade level. Links and detailed information is below. If you have any questions, please contact your student’s counselor.
Last Friday night, our varsity girls basketball team beat Lincoln on a buzzer beater! It was an exciting win and a big step for the program. It was also a great finale to our winter Spirit Week! You can see a video of the winning shot and another video of Spirit highlights below.
Spring sports are just around the corner. Getting involved in an after-school activity or club is a great way to become involved in the school community, support healthy habits, and looks good on a college application. We offer Baseball, Softball, Golf, Tennis, and Track & Field. If you have never participated in a sport before, Track and Field is a great opportunity. You do not need to have any experience, it is a non-cut sport so that everyone who comes out makes the team, and is a great way to challenge yourself. If you are not interested in athletic activities, I strongly encourage you to join a club or talk to our SUN coordinator for other ways to get involved in your school community.
The school play “SpongeBob the Musical” has their opening night on March 4! We will share more details next week with performance times.
Have a great long weekend and please let us know if you need anything!

Successful Schools Survey: Family Feedback Requested
On Monday, February 14, Portland Public Schools started the annual Successful Schools Survey that allows the district to gather important information.
For us, especially coming back to in-person learning and in a new building it will provide us some important feedback as we improve the conditions in our new setting.
The Successful Schools Survey will take about 15-30 minutes to finish. For more details follow these links:
If you would like to request a paper copy, please call the McDaniel main office and leave a voicemail with your name and phone number 503-916-5220.
Thank you so much for your time,
McDaniel HS Staff
ENDING SOON: Forecasting - 2022-2023 School Year
The McDaniel HS Counseling team visited English classes this week to review Forecasting for next school year. If your student has not yet forecasted for classes with their counselor, they should contact them as soon as possible!
Forecasting provides students with the opportunity to identify the core courses required to graduate as well as elective courses available that can both enhance and support their school experience. PPS requires 24 credits to graduate. A full schedule of eight classes provides students with the opportunity to take maximum advantage of the educational opportunities offered at McDaniel.
Students should carefully review the list of courses available, consult with their families and counselor as needed, and select 8 courses along with alternate course choices that meet their educational goals.
