The Annual Community Meeting was held last Monday in the Prendiville Centre. An important part of this meeting is the endorsement of the College Board Members for 2017.

The College Board is conducted within the Catholic School Board Constitution of the Catholic Education Commission of Western Australia.

Board responsibilities include:

• Provide direction and advice in Capital Development

• Provide advice in Strategic Planning

• Provide advice and support in Finance

• Ensuring appropriate governance of the College

• Support the Principal and the Leadership Team

• Promote and support the College through sub-committees

We are always appreciative of the generous time given by parents and friends to support our College. At the Community meeting the following parents were welcomed to the Board for 2017:

The commitment of all board members is valued and over a long period of time Mrs Walker and Mr Harvey have guided the College to a very positive position. Our College has low debt, is well resourced, has wonderful facilities and a developing strong culture of learning and aspiration.

Mrs Denny Piovesan also provided an in-depth Parents and Friends report. The report highlighted the positive partnership that is important between the College and its parents. We are blessed to have an engaging Parent and Friends group who are committed to community building, engagement and outreach to parents in times of need. Mrs Piovesan is acknowledged for her amazing commitment to our College as the P and F Chair and also a College Board member.


At the whole school assembly this week our student leaders launched the introduction of our College Honours and Colours system. The system of awards across all College endeavours will recognise student commitment and personal excellence. It is an awards system that is in the reach of all students and we look forward to the first round of Colours and Honours being presented this year.

An important aspect of students in Year 12 is the Year 12 Retreat. This is a special time for our students where they can stop for a few days and recharge, reflect and immerse in an enriching retreat program. It is always a highlight for our Year 12 students and we wish them well for their retreat time.

Option Advice Forms are due for return by 17th February and first fee instalments are payable by 23rd February 2017. You are welcome to return fee forms via the email above, post or in person at our College Finance Office open 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Health Care/Pension Card Tuition Discount Scheme - APPLICATIONS CLOSE 7TH APRIL 2017.

A reminder to eligible families who have not yet done so, to complete their applications for the Health Care/Pension Card Tuition Discount Scheme. This discount is applied to student’s tuition fees.

All applicants must provide a current Health Care Card or Pension Concession Card in person and once deemed eligible, will be asked to complete an application form.

Please note: The HCC discount does not apply to HCC cards in the name of the student, DVA TPI & Gold, White or Orange PCC, Commonwealth & DVA Seniors HCC, Carer Allowance HCC, Mobility Allowance HCC, Ex-Carer Allowance (Child) HCC, Foster Child HCC or ABSTUDY students who access alternative government support.

In order to qualify for the Health Care Card Tuition Fee Discount, parents must provide a valid card throughout the year. If you are not re-issued with a card or do not provide the new card when requested then your account will be adjusted accordingly.

Forms are also available for the Secondary Assistance Scheme which provides families with a Clothing Allowance of $115 paid directly to their nominated bank account so please bring your bank account details with you. To be eligible for this allowance, your Health Care/ Pension Card must be valid at some point between 1st February and 7th April 2017.

Applications can be made at the College Finance Office which is open from 8.00am to 4.00pm weekdays during school terms.

It has come to light that some emails are not being received by holders of free email accounts i.e. Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo. Please check your spam or junk folders and if necessary, add Prendiville to your safe senders list.

If you wish to check if you are receiving everything, emails sent from the College recently included the following:

1. Community welcome letter from the Principal emailed to all parents on 27 January.

2. Invitation to the AGM emailed on 9 February.

3. Fee statements were emailed to your nominated billing email on 1 February. If you have not received your fee statement, please contact our Finance office.

Prendiville Catholic College is excited to announce the launch of our new prestigious Colours and Honours Awards. These awards are designed to recognise the achievement of excellence, and consistent and sustained application and effort of students in the Academic, Sporting, Cultural and Service domains.

The implementation of the Awards will be phased in over two years. Colours will be introduced this year and Honours in 2018.

Students and parents are encouraged to read the Colours and Honours Policy for more information. The Policy can be accessed from SEQTA Documents.


At peak times, those wishing to enter the southern car park when approaching from the south are requested to go further north along Constellation Drive, around the round-about and then enter the car park making a left turn only. This will prevent you waiting for an excessive period of time to enter the car park and also enable those making a right turn to exit the car park more readily.

This is an issue of student safety and parent convenience – it requires the compliance of all drivers. Parents are also asked to park in the bays when collecting their children after school. They should not queue on the roadway of the car park as this prevents others from leaving the bays and creates congestion. Parents usually soon realise that picking up their children 10 minutes after the end of the school day saves a lot of hassle – students waiting for a few extra minutes will survive the wait!


The excitement had been building since the start of our high school lives and we had all dreamt of the day the Dinner Dance would finally arrive. It didn't feel real until we came to school on that Friday and saw our fellow peers, all eager and prepared for the occasion. We left school at lunchtime to get ready for a night to remember. Hair, makeup, suits, dresses, corsages and boutonnières that were all once dreams were about to become a reality. At Fraser’s in Kings Park, limousines and party buses pulled up one after the other filled with glamorous men and women who we knew to be our school mates. There were smiles all around as the students greeted the teachers - who looked just as incredible.

Fraser’s provided us with a refreshing and fruity mocktail upon our arrival as we all gathered and chatted outside the restaurant overlooking the breathtaking view of Perth city. As we walked into the venue we were in awe at the setting. The theme chosen, A Masquerade Ball, had been kept a surprise by the Dinner Dance Committee. Arrangements of feathers and masks grabbed our attention as we found our seat via the themed name tags delicately placed at our tables.

As the night unfolded, we were exposed to an array of photo taking opportunities. A picture speaks a thousand words and many students took advantage of this aspect of the night. Options included professional pictures with teachers, friends and even classes, alongside personal pictures accompanied by dates, friends, and that gorgeous view again! Many pictures taken of the memorable night will resonate within each individual's mind, as irreplaceable moments were captured and frozen in time. After we had all devoured the 3-course meal the entertainment began. With the main attraction of the night being the dance floor, a selection of students (alongside teachers) took advantage of the dancing area filled with balloons and accompanying music, to ensure an unforgettable night with an unforgettable cohort.

Thank you to everyone who made this night a success and a special mention to Miss Charles and Mrs Crompton for organising such a spectacular event.

This year over 200 of our excited, fresh faced year 7 students attending Year 7 Camp. Brigid, Francis, McAuley and Romero students attended Woodman Point with Chisholm and Salvado students attending Ern Halliday. The students were amazing! Despite the cold and wet weather, the students displayed resilience and a positive attitude and many new friendships were formed. This is what the students had to say about camp.

On behalf of Brigid House, I am honoured to be writing about our Year 7 Camp. It may have been raining but trying new things and having a go was awesome! The activities we did were incredible….like archery, rock climbing, beach team building and many more! The best part of camp was making new friends and building on friendships we already had.

Thank you to all the teachers for putting up with us and making us feel so welcome at our new school. Brigid’s motto is “Just have a go!”, and we supported each other to try our best at whatever we did. All of us would like to thank the House Coordinators for making this camp possible. The Year 7 Camp has been the best start to becoming a Prendivillian!

Ern Halliday was really fun. Although the weather was not good, that didn’t stop us from having lots of fun. The meals were delicious and the activities were really enjoyable.

Camp was a great experience. I met many lovely friends and I have been introduced to a lot more teachers. Overall, I recommend camp and I was challenged in many different ways which I didn’t think was possible. I want to say thank you to my teammates and teachers for a fantastic time at camp.

2017 Year 7 camp: What a camp! It was only the first day and everyone was already buzzing with excitement wondering what activity they were going to do first. Archery, raft building, rock climbing or team building. No one could stop thinking about it. Lots of kids would agree that the beach team building games were one of highlights of camp and we all learnt a bit more about working as a team. We all loved when the House councilors came and visited us on camp. Everyone learnt something new about the House councilors and each other. Movie night was great! Everyone was exchanging sweets, whispering and getting involved into the movie all asking the same question: what's gonna happen next? Nights at camp were so much fun with lots of socialising and laughing. Camp soon came to an end when we came back from ice-skating, all with smiling faces but everyone would agree we all had fun. We all tried something new and we all made a new friend.

I really enjoyed going to camp. I liked the bike rides, rock climbing, makings rafts and going ice skating. If I could, I would definitely go to Year 7 camp again and I hope next year’s Year 7 class had as much fun as I did.

The best thing on camp was the fact that everybody was incredibly comforting and nice. This made the time very enjoyable.

This week invitations to represent Prendiville Catholic College in the HAVE SUM FUN competition have been extended to student mathematicians across Years 7 – 12. Prendiville has a long tradition of participation in this competition which follows a quiz night format with teams of six students solving four rounds of eight problems throughout the evening. Schools across the state are represented and a fantastic time is usually had by all.

Invitations have been sent via email and through PCG/Maths classes to eligible students. We are hoping to field teams in the three levels: Junior (Yr 7-8) Intermediate (Yr 9-10) and Senior (Yr 11-12). Registration closes early March so please RSVP to your teachers ASAP. If you are an interested student who has not received an invitation please contact the following teachers by direqt message to indicate your interest, Mr Barry (Junior), Mrs Mernagh (Intermediate) or Ms Nguyen (Senior).

Lower school Textbooks: it is pleasing to find that most students have been able to activate the Cambridge Hotmaths digital text, have joined their online classes and downloaded pdf copies of their text books to iBooks. A small number of students have discovered that when they enter their code sent by Campion, the code has already been used. If this is true for you and the code is new (i.e. not second-hand but purchased from Campion end of 2016 or 2017 for this year) please contact the Maths Department with a copy of the emailed code from Campion. Interhouse Swimming Carnival

With the Interhouse Swimming Carnival (13th March) fast approaching, we have sent out information to all students and parents/guardians via Direqt Messages regarding the nomination process. Students who want to participate can nominate themselves in as many events as they would like. In the process, getting as many points as possible for their House and competing for a place on the final swim squad that will represent the College at the ACC Swimming Carnival. Nominations close Monday 20th February at 5pm. The carnival programme of events will follow once the nominations have been completed and organised.

We are also looking for some parent helpers to assist us on the day. At this point, we are pleased to have a handful of parents who have already put their hands up to help this year and we would love to have more. If you would like to be involved or have any queries please contact Marius Ndiaye.

CAS Sport

Thank you to all coaches, students and parents for their efforts in our first week of CAS Sport for 2017. It was a less than ideal preparation with such a short Week 1 but it was pleasing to see all teams represented on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. A major change to this year's season applies to weeks when teams are having to travel to opposition schools. These teams are currently permitted to get changed at lunchtime into the PE Uniform in an effort to allow students to arrive at away schools before the scheduled 4pm start time for all CAS matches. Students who are playing home games will still have to get changed after school as per previous years. It is important that parents and students remember that they are only permitted to get changed into PE uniform that includes their red PE shirt and runners. Students are not permitted to wear various sporting team tops or studded footwear (footy boots) that they may have to wear for the game.

Swimming training

Attendance at swimming training has remained at consistent levels throughout this first fortnight of the year. Well done to the Year 7/8 students who have made up the bulk of the numbers at our first 6 sessions. We really need to start seeing some of the older students in Years 9-12 setting a good example and attending some of the sessions on a consistent basis. Even one session a week will lead to improvements before our two carnivals in Weeks 7 and 8. Those students who are looking at attending any of the swimming trainings will need to collect a permission slip from Miss Sharp in the PE Office prior to attendance.

Ocean Ridge Junior Football Club Player Registration Day

Any boys who are interested in playing AFL at a community level are encouraged to attend the Ocean Ridge Junior Football Club registration day on the 19th February between 12pm and 4pm at Heathridge Park. Teams are available from Years 7-12 but any younger siblings who wish to play may also attend to register for teams in the younger age groups. For more information please visit the clubs website.

The College First XI began the season in scorcher type fashion with a strong win over Belridge Secondary College. This was a significant 52 - run win over the accomplished cricket academy school.

Scott Gerrans was outstanding with some fine wicket keeping and fast 48 to ensure the baggy reds won their opening game of the season.

Prendiville First XI fielded first and were quick to draw a wicket in the second ball of the match. Wickets fell frequently, with Patrick Mullane on a hat-trick at one stage and Belridge ended up all out for 80 runs. Prendiville batsman led by Scott Gerrans were quick to pile on the runs and surpassed Belridge’s score in the 14th over finishing with a total of 132 runs.

The two months spent in Italy on the WAATI/Intercultura exchange programme is probably now a distant for our 5 exchange students. Below are some of their thoughts:

Over the summer holidays I had the wonderful opportunity to spend two months in Italy through the exchange program that our school offers. These two months were the most incredible of my life, I lived with an Italian family in Rome and attended a linguistics high school. It is impossible to put into words what a phenomenal experience I had, not only seeing another part of the world but also being able become a part of the culture, if only for a short time. As an exchange student, I discovered a new sense of freedom and the friends I have made will stay with me for a lifetime.

Living in Italy for 2 months was a once in a life time opportunity, I got to experience the way of living of Italians in the home, at school and on the weekend. I did find it difficult at times being in such a different country and doing things I am not used to. However, I met so many amazing people, saw many beautiful cities, improved my Italian more than I could imagine and got to eat some great food!

My time in Italy was something one cannot explain, only experience. I lived in Potenza for two months with an amazing family who allowed me to completely experience Italian culture. I attended a linguistic high school and met some of the most amazing people I have ever known. The special connection you make with the many people you meet over such a short time are bonds that you cannot create without an experience like this. Travelling and living in a country are two completely different adventures and I would wholeheartedly recommend living in a country as you truly get to experience a different view of life. I still keep in contact with both my family and friends in Italy and we have made plans to visit each other in the future. It is also a great experience for the students in Italy. My closest friend in Italy said: 'It was a fantastic experience that I would gladly do again.' I highly recommend this program to everyone, it is an opportunity that you cannot pass up.

Over the summer holidays I went to Italy for two months on an Italian exchange program with Intercultura and WAATI. I stayed with the Tisselli Family in the city of Forlì which is twenty minutes from Bologna. I went to a linguistics school which included French, Spanish, German, English as well as Italian classes - my host sister, Vittoria, is fluent in each language except German. I loved the food and the places I got to visit. My family was very generous and took me to see Venice, Florence, Bologna, Rome and Milan. The cities are so beautiful and very different to Australian cities, every corner there is something to see and sometimes you would walk down the alleyways and see marble statues and art sculptures built into the walls. School was very different and I found it to be more difficult compared to Australian schools as almost every day they have oral interrogations, listening tests and writing tests. They also do subjects like French history (the teacher speaks in French), philosophy and the study of art. I learnt so much from my experience and made a new family in Italy, I can't wait to go back!

Ciao, my name is Storme Williams, I participated in the incredible two month exchange program in Italy. I lived in Modica, a town located in Sicily. I lived with an amazing family who gave me the opportunity to immerse myself in the Italian culture and lifestyle. In my Italian family I lived with two sisters and a younger brother who I shared an infinite amount of memories with. They were extremely welcoming to me and made my time in Italy unforgettable. I attended a human science school and met some of the most down to earth people I have ever known. I was able to meet amazing people from other countries through my local chapter of Intercultura such as Argentina, Costa Rica, Korea and America who were also completing a 10 month exchange program. Through this experience I improved in my Italian skills and who I was as a person. Travelling to a foreign country and living there for two months allowed me to soak up a unique and hospitable culture. Overall, I would undoubtedly recommend this wonderful experience it’s a once in a life time chance to experience a new culture, meet new people and form bonds and friendships that will never be forgotten.

Rehearsals are underway for this year’s College musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie. Set in 1920’s New York, Millie Dillmont is on a mission to find money over love, and takes delight in the flapper lifestyle which is thrust at her feet.

The production got underway at the end of 2015 (believe it or not!) when the production staff narrowed down a number of West End and Broadway hits to Millie. Since then, auditions and rehearsals commenced in earnest last year, and we are well on our way to producing another five-show season come mid-May.

Check out our new Fiction hard copy titles on the bay ends in the Fiction section of the Library or for those of you who prefer to read eBooks try our Wheelers eBooks. These are available on your iPads through the Student Dashboard under the Library tab. New titles are continually being added.

Library Lovers’ Day

Staff and students alike joined in the celebrations this week for Library Lovers’ Day. Students who borrowed a book from the Library this week received a sweet treat in celebration of the occasion, which was held on Tuesday February 14th! Staff who wore red in celebration of Library Lovers’ Day were also rewarded with a sweet treat. Some students enjoyed a ‘blind date’ with a book by borrowing one of the lucky dip books that were available. The Book Matchmaker was also in residence to match students with their ‘perfect match’ in a book!

Year 7-10 Reading Forums

Year 7-10 Reading Forums were opened last week. They are a useful way to recommend books to others, as well as find a good book to read for yourself. These can be found in SEQTA Learn~ Forums.

The Uniform shop is in need of good quality secondhand clothing. Please make sure all items are in good condition. Items should be clean with no holes, stains or fraying. Blazers should have been dry-cleaned. Clothing can be delivered to the Uniform Shop.

Prendiville Catholic College offered the four lower house candidates for Joondalup in the coming state election the opportunity to express their vision for Catholic Education in the future. The following were the responses we received:

Julie Matheson for Western Australia Party

Many members of Julie Matheson’s party for Western Australia are beneficiaries of a Catholic education over many decades. Although our Party does not have specific policies about Catholic education, we support a school curriculum teaching an understanding of Christian beliefs and the opportunity to practice their faith in local communities.

Importantly, WA is broke! Any election promises for more schools or more funding will be broken without first fixing our GST. The GST is a State tax raised in WA. This election we will make laws to keep our GST in Western Australia to fix our $40 Billion debt and our growing budget deficit.

The contribution made by Catholic Education to Western Australia’s education system is deeply valued and WA Labor is particularly aware that Catholic Education makes a valuable contribution in educating some of the state’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged students. Across our suburbs and towns Catholic Education is offering parents’ choice and high quality education.

A McGowan Labor government will work closely with the Catholic Education Office to ensure that all WA students, whichever sector their school is within, receive the very best education.

There are areas where the Catholic, independent and public school sectors can collaborate more. In the area of professional development for teachers for example, there are many opportunities. Teachers from all sectors have reported that some of the very best, most productive professional development they have participated in has been when teachers from across the sectors are in the same room. I have been particularly impressed by the work on design thinking and deep learning being led through Catholic Education's Studio Curious project.

If elected, a McGowan Labor government will work with Catholic Education to identify and prioritise the specific areas where we can collaborate over the next four years.

In two weeks, on the 26th February, we will be shaking things up a bit at the youth group! We will be having a brunch after the 10am Mass in the St Simon Peter's parish hall. There will be plenty of bacon and eggs, sausages and buns! It will begin straight after Mass at 11am and will finish at 12:30pm. THIS MEANS WE WILL NOT BE MEETING AT 6PM ON 26TH FEB.
