Principal's Message
Dear Families,
We have had an amazing week at Haynes Elementary School. We began the week with our first ALL-School meeting, which will be held every other week. We then had wonderful weather for our picture day and were able to take our pictures outside in the playground area. This Wednesday, we had an early release day and our educators created lessons and visuals for their classrooms that focus on the Zones of Regulation, a curriculum that helps students learn how to regulate their emotions, self-control, and problem solving skills. On Wednesday evening, HOP hosted a Welcome Back Picnic.
Our teachers are actively collaborating and planning lessons to support all students. We continue to be so proud of our educators and students for creating a positive learning environment for all.
Last week, I wrote about an unexpected visitor at the front of our school. To provide you an update, as promised, this person was reported twice; on Friday, September 2nd, and on Wednesday, September 7th. This individual was present in the morning, when buses were present. This individual has not been at Haynes Elementary since that time. We will continue to watch and monitor our school on a regular basis and will keep our families posted of any updates, when needed.
Sincerely,
Dr. Nadine Ekstrom
All School Meeting
At our first ALL-School meeting this past week, we were able to recognize four (4) Hawk Stars!!! They were able to sit in the "hawk's nest" in the front of the assembly. We want to congratulate all of our students who received a "hawk sighting" over these past few weeks of school. At each ALL-School meeting, we will be pulling names of students from each grade level to be the lucky student recognized as our Hawk Star!
Our ALL-School meeting focused on the communication board added in our playground.
Haynes Playground Communication Board
We would like to thank SERF for the grant opportunity, which allowed Haynes to receive this amazing communication board on our playground. We also want to thank, The Semple Family and Semple Landscaping, Inc. for installing this device on our grounds at Haynes Elementary School. Most importantly, we would like to thank Sarah Markowitz, our speech-language pathologist, who wrote the proposal to SERF requesting this Assistive Communication Device for our school.
A Note from Our School Nurse
Potential Illness:
The school environment is an excellent medium for the rapid spread of illness. If you know or suspect your child is ill, please keep them home. Fever (over 100.4*), gastrointestinal illness with nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, active cold symptoms, coughing that is distracting to the child and others, untreated conjunctivitis or strep throat, and unexplained rash are some reasons to keep your child home. Children can return to school when they have been fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medications, able to resume a normal diet after gastrointestinal illness, have taken antibiotics for 24 hours for a bacterial infection (strep throat, conjunctivitis), and are experiencing mild cold and cough symptoms. If you have any questions about when it is appropriate to keep your child home, please feel free to contact your school nurse. Together, we can determine the best action for your child's symptoms.
Covid:
We are following DESE COVID GUIDANCE for schools. Below is a summary of testing for symptoms, isolation, and exposure guidance. Please let the nurse know if you have already performed a COVID test for your ill child, or include it in your message when calling about an absence for illness. We appreciate you being diligent in following this guidance.
Symptomatic individuals (see symptoms below) must have a COVID antigen test done. Students may remain in school if symptoms are mild and a negative result is received. If unable to test, students will be sent home.
Symptoms of COVID that require testing
One of the following: fever, chills, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, new loss of taste or smell, muscle aches, cough (not due to other known cause, such as chronic cough)
Two or more of the following: sore throat, nausea, vomiting, headache, fatigue, nasal congestion or runny nose (not due to other known causes, such as allergies)
COVID positive individuals must isolate for 5 days. Day zero is when symptoms started or if asymptomatic the day the test was done. Individuals may return to school on day 6 if fever free without use of fever reducing medicine for 24 hours. They must mask through day 10, unless a covid test is negative on day 5 or later. If unable to mask, they must continue to isolate until a negative test or day 10.
Quarantine is no longer required after exposure. Students may come to school as long as they remain asymptomatic. Masking is strongly recommended, along with testing on day 6 after exposure.

Do you have any time you might be able to help in the library? Projects include shelving books and preparing new ones. I can schedule you once a week, twice a month, or for special projects. Support This Month's Collection for the Sudbury Food Pantry
One of Haynes' longest-standing traditions, please join Haynes in supporting the Sudbury Food Pantry by bringing your contributions to school on Friday, September 23rd. Donations are collected inside the school as your student enters the building. The Sudbury Food Pantry assists 60 to 80 families each week. The school food drive provides 45% of the food that is distributed throughout the community. Some wish list items include pasta, cereal, boxed rice, large soups, baking, meals, tomato (sauce, diced, paste), condiments, and macaroni and cheese.
Students will drop off items as they enter the building, and parent volunteers will bring them to Sewataro. They will then be sorted and boxed up for delivery to the Food Pantry.
Thank you, in advance, for supporting this cause!
Spirit Day Returns - September 23rd

SERF is a wonderful organization that supports our schools. Please click on this link to the flyer for more information: SERF Flyer
Parent/Teacher Conferences - Coming Soon!
The parent/teacher conferences will be held on November 2nd, November 9th, and November 16th. Your teachers will be in contact with you soon to schedule your conferences. We are happy to have these conferences in-person this year.
Morning Drop-Off Concerns
It has been brought to our attention that some parents have used Julian's Way as an area for a U-Turn, near the gate. We kindly ask that you select another option, as children often walk in this area unattended. This could cause an unsafe space for our students. We ask that you please consider other options that would be safe for all. Thank you for your understanding.
