Knights of Columbus Coat Drive is a Hugh Success

The Knights of Columbus coat drive has been a charitable seasonal event for a number of years and this year their efforts may be record setting. On Tuesday, November 24, 2015 members of the local Knights of Columbus Council #1182 of Athol delivered a truly generous collection of coats, hats, mittens, scarfs, and neck warmers to Pleasant Street School to benefit children throughout the Athol Royalston Regional School District. When all was unpacked, sorted, purchased new and/or professionally cleaned for those gently used donations, a total of 83 winter coats, 200 hats, 75 pairs of mittens, and over 35 scarfs and neck warmers were raised through this community wide effort.

While the Knights of Columbus have led the area coat drive they wanted to be sure to recognize community partners who supported or otherwise collaborated to support this cause. Erika’s Dry Cleaning, of 293 Exchange St., Athol donated their cleaning services. Lorrie Brodeur, Activities Coordinator at Sunrise Assisted Living in Leominster, worked with elder knitting volunteers who go by the name of Charity Stitch Night on the donation of beautifully hand knit hats, mittens, scarfs, and neck warmers. Kevin Murphy of Fiske, Murphy and Mack Funeral Home, the North Quabbin Patch located at 423 Main St. Athol and the Family Center at Valuing Our Children located at 217 Walnut St., Athol also serve as community partners. Lastly, Rachel Schwab and Linda Jaskoviak, elementary school guidance counselors for the Athol Royalston Regional School District, have been involved in this project. On behalf of the many children within the Athol Royalston Regional School District who will benefit from these generously donated coats and winter wear items, we wish to express our deep gratitude.

If your child is in financial need of a coat, please contact Rachel Schwab, Guidance Counselor at Pleasant Street School and the Royalston Community School or Linda Jaskoviak, Guidance Counselor for Riverbend/ Sanders Street Schools, to let us know your child's first and last name, the size coat that your child needs, and whether your child also needs a hat and mittens. You could also write a note in your child's school Agenda Book, or Homework folder, and your child's teacher will give the note to the guidance counselor.

ELL Students at Childrens' Book Festival

English language Learners from Pleasant Street and Riverbend Scool recently spent a Saturday at an authors' fair at Mt. Wachusett Community College. Students asked questions about authors' craft of a panel of authors, listened to authors read (and rap), got their faces painted, munched a lot of free cider doughnuts, created their own story strings, crafted colorful cards and even challenged author/ illustrator Jef Czekaj to a drawing competition. It was a fun day. (Sorry Jef , from what I can tell.... The students win!) Submitted by Beth Gospodarek

News from Riverbend & Sanders Street

The entire community at Riverbend School gathered to reflect on "things to be thankful for" at a mini feast the day before Thanksgiving. Long tables were laid out and set. All students passed around plates of shared snacks. (They practiced polite "no thank you helpings " with the sardines Mrs. Steve brought.) The English Language Learners and helpers cooked kale and potatoes from the Riverbend Garden and made homemade applesauce from local apples. All were popular. In fact, students asked to bring home the leftover kale! The school garden was originally a project funded by the Athol Royalston Education Foundation.

Third Grade Self Portraits

Working with Mrs. Magee, third grade students created self-portraits using cut paper collage techniques. Students worked to identify where facial features are located and their relative size. The also created a background that has meaning related to the portrait.
