Celebrating the Work We Do!
Thoughts from Cameron: In my job I have the unique opportunity to see the work that is being completed by our staff across the entire district. I see our staff putting in the effort to be creative, to try something new, to be strategic risk takers, and to push beyond the routine to create a premier educational environment and experience for our students.
Over the past few years, we have tried to highlight some of this work through our Mustang Moments and 60-Seconds with the Superintendent. Yet, we know there is more going on in the departments and buildings and we want to hear from you.
No idea is too small or not “innovative” enough. We all learn from each other and we have many experts in our midst. Whether it be a cool lesson, a new project for summer cleaning, an idea to get kids to be great passengers on the bus ride home, or a building goal that has been achieved, please click HERE to share it or to share on behalf of your colleagues.
Let’s work together to move beyond our classroom, office, and/or department and learn and grow together.
Strongsville High School Senior Brianna Matelski receives Outstanding Peer Achievement Award
Strongsville High School senior Brianna Matelski was recently recognized by the Educational Service Center of Cuyahoga County and the region’s State Support Team at the Annual Excellence in Education Awards event. Brianna was the recipient of the 2018 Outstanding Peer Achievement Award and was nominated by high school speech and language pathologist Kristina Dodus.
As president of her school’s Project Support Club, Brianna is influential in planning the club’s activities that include monthly get togethers with typical peers and individuals with disabilities. During her free time she also assists with social skills groups to support students with disabilities in understanding and practicing social skills. Brianna sets an example for her fellow students, and encourages them to participate in activities that are inclusive and fun.
Before attending the high school, Brianna attended Chapman Elementary and Albion Middle School. Brianna is pictured above at the event with her parents Therese and Kevin. CONGRATULATIONS Brianna!
AIR / EOC Test Scores
The anticipated date to receive preliminary AIR/EOC score report data from the Ohio Department of Education is June 4th. This data comes in a raw data file which needs downloaded and simplified to make it usable. Once we have this data, it will be shared with Central Office administrators, and Cameron will share out overall test scores via email to all teachers. We realize this data is incredibly important to you and will work quickly to get you overall/ building scores within a few days after the release. You should be able to log into the Teacher Section in the “ONLINE REPORTING SYSTEM” in the AIR PORTAL (http://oh.portal.airast.org/users/teachers.stml) to see individual teacher/class scores as well. We genuinely appreciate the efforts you exerted this year to prepare your students. The dedication and commitment has not gone unnoticed!
Professional Growth Plans
There have been some changes in the law in regards to the PGP. Remember that your PGP for all OTES and NON-OTES personnel is due no later than June 6 this year.
Teachers who final summative rating is “accomplished” will develop a professional growth plan independently.
Teachers whose final summative rating is “skilled” will develop a professional growth plan collaboratively with his/her credentialed evaluator.
Teachers whose final summative rating is “developing” will develop a professional growth plan with their credentialed evaluator.
Teachers whose final summative rating is “ineffective” will develop a professional improvement plan with their credentialed evaluator.
Also, teachers receiving a final summative rating of Accomplished and Skilled on their previous evaluation may submit their evaluator request to their building principal in writing no later than September 1st. Evaluator assignments will be made on a first come-first serve basis until an evaluator reaches his/her cap. An evaluator cap is equal to the number of annual evaluations required in the building divided by the number of building-level evaluators. Teachers who are not assigned a selected evaluator based on their request will have an evaluator assigned.
Summer Professional Development
Many departments/courses/grade level subjects have recently used release time to update maps and common assessments. Additionally, multiple TBTs have scheduled summer work days to complete the work. If you are in need of time to work together and want to use a designated day in the summer, please let Erin know. Teachers will be paid the daily curriculum rate for this work ($100/ 6 hours).
Updates on SIIP & SLO's
SIIP: On Monday, May 14th the DLT met for the last time. BLTs will be sharing information with you soon regarding upcoming changes for next year that reflect a condensed IIP for 2018-2019. We have taken the action steps and paired them down and are requiring less evidence to be collected by BLTs. Our focus will remain UDL integration, as well as, intervention for students that Tier I cannot solely be used for their success. Finally, we will be holding our BLT summit once again and will finalize the date soon (Please keep August 13, 14, 15 open for now).
SLO's: For now, it looks like SLO’s will be in place for one more year. There is legislation pending however that could change that, but even so there would not be time to have another measure or the OTES rubric to reflect the necessary changes. Even though this will most likely be the last year, they can still be used for a common assessment.
Summer Facilities Work
As a result of efficiencies and savings on the projects funded by the $81 million bond issue passed in 2012, the following construction work and improvements to our facilities will be taking place this summer:
- HVAC repairs/updates at Chapman Elementary - converting the all electric building to more efficient and cost-effective natural gas
- Creation of secure vestibules at our elementary schools
- Resurfacing the driveways and parking lots at all elementary schools
SPOT Update
A Spring Update from SPOT will be forwarded soon. However, we would like to thank those of you who attended the staff party, congratulate those who have received SPOT awards for being a team player, and thank everyone for your continued efforts to make SCS a great place for students. As you drive around town, hopefully you will notice the SENIOR SIGNS that were placed in graduating seniors yards, thank you to all of our volunteers!
