Team 9 Core Classes
Thank you so much for attending Student-Led Conferences this past week! It was a pleasure meeting with parents and guardians :)
We are well into our second unit of the year. The focus of this unit will be on one of the most famous books ever written--To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Even though this book was published in 1960, the lessons it contains are more important than ever.
Students just finished presenting their Character Expert Assignments. This assignment required students to create a presentation that taught others about a character we have read about so far in To Kill a Mockingbird. Students did an awesome job! It was a great opportunity to stop and reflect on the first three chapters of the novel.
We are now through the first five chapters of the book. On Tuesday, students will take their second quiz over To Kill a Mockingbird. This quiz will cover chapters 4-6. The quizzes that we take for this book should be extremely easy if students are doing the reading and participating in class discussion.
After the quiz, we will stop and reflect on chapters 1-6 and consider the idea of morality. Our big essential question for Unit 2 is "What shapes our sense of morality and how does that knowledge influence our interactions with others?" After some discussion and pre-writing, students will be asked to write an informative paragraph that explains how Jem and Scout's morality has been impacted or shaped by their father, Atticus. This paragraph will also count as an assessment for class.
Please feel free to e-mail me at any time with questions or concerns about your student's progress in Language Arts. I am happy to help with all of your needs! Thank you for sharing your student with me--I'm having a great school year with this group of 8th graders.

The Lewis and Clark Expedition
We have learned about the Louisiana Purchase and Lewis & Clark's 'Corps of Discovery' that explored the territory and reported back their findings. In class, we read Jefferson's Letter to Lewis explaining their mission and we are doing a project creating a Report Card evaluating Lewis & Clark's expedition in four categories as well as an Overall Grade.
This project will be due Tuesday, Nov. 5th
This next week we will be diving further into Earth Structures as we learn about the different land forms.
As the weather starts getting colder and flu season approaches, I just want to remind us all to make sure we are all getting enough sleep and washing our hands frequently!
As always, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns!
